Director's Corner

As I sit here on Sunday afternoon thinking about what to write in this Director’s Corner, I find myself reflecting back on the events of this past week and also forward toward Pre-Registration and the 2010-2011 academic year. Periodically, I glance outside to see if the next round of snow is falling from the sky. As you, I wonder if there will be enough snow to cause either closures or delays to any school days this week. Certainly by the time you are reading this on Monday we will have a better sense of how the weather will affect the week. My prayer is for limited snow fall that does not close school. After so many days off last week, it is my opinion, and based on many of the comments I heard through the week, that our students need to be in school.

Bishop-Elect Medley’s Ordination
What an incredible event on Wednesday! It certainly gave all in attendance or able to watch on TV a real sense of the richness and tradition of our Catholic faith. To be honest, I sat in awe through the ordination thanking God for the opportunity given all in attendance to participate in such a time honored and spiritual ritual. I walked away even more certain than when I walked in of God’s presence at work in the Diocese of Owensboro. He certainly has blessed us with a caring and insightful shepherd. Please join me in praying for Bishop Medley as he begins his new ministry. May God bless him and keep him close to His heart through these first weeks and months as our new Bishop.

Please let me take this opportunity to thank all of the students who wore their school uniform to the ordination. It looked t o me that there was green and white everywhere. I cannot tell you how many people approached me at the reception and through the week with very positive comments concerning our students. They talked not just about the number, as evidenced by all the uniforms, but also the reference shown throughout the ordination Mass. Congratulations and way to go!

On Friday afternoon, the family of Sean and Anne Higgins presented to Bishop Medley in his office letters of welcome and invitation from each of the 18 Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Owensboro. As you can see in the attached picture, Sean and Anne were joined by their children in representing all Catholic School students, their families and school staffs across the Diocese. Bishop Medley obviously thoroughly enjoyed this special interchange. Special thanks to Sean, Anne and the kids for agreeing to represent the Diocese in this way.

OneCallNow
Thanks for the many positive comments about OneCallNow. As you, I wish that you did not have to hear my voice so often. If you are not receiving a call, or you would like to receive calls on additional telephone numbers, please contact your child’s school or Central Office at 686.8896. We can easily add, or delete, phone numbers to the OneCallNow system. Please note that in addition to school closing and other weather-related messages, OneCallNow is also used for emergency notifications and announcement about school activities and events.

Tuition Assistance Process Update
The posted deadline for the submission of the PSAS Student Aid Form to be included in Round 1 is Monday, February 15th. Last week, several families called worried about missing the deadline. I encouraged them to complete the form and submit it with all of the necessary documentation no later than March 1st. As in the past, our goal is to have the Round 1 tuition assistance award letters in the mail by March 15th. I would like to encourage all families interested in need-based tuition assistance for the 2010-2011 academic year to apply now. We want as many in the first round as possible. Do not hesitate to contact the Central Office (686-8896) with questions or the need for assistance.

2010-2011 Pre-Registration
Pre-Registration for 2010-2011 is scheduled to occur from March 15th to March 26th. Additional information and the Pre-Registration Form will be forwarded to all OCS families in early March. An electronic copy of the form will also be available on the OCS web site. We are working on ways to utilize the data available to us InformationNow in order to simplify the process for both you and the school staffs. More information concerning this will be forwarded to you as we get closer to Pre-Registration.

Please note the following important change to the Pre-Registration process. Beginning with this Pre-Registration process, we ask that the Parish Voucher be attached to the Pre-Registration Form. Our OCS Pastors have agreed to move the process of awarding vouchers from the summer Registration event to Pre-Registration. In doing this we better align the voucher and the important information it provides with our billing cycle for the 2010-2011 school year beginning in June. We are working with each Parish to ensure that the timeliness of this new voucher process.

FACTS – Important Message
Approximately 450 families utilize FACTS to budget their tuition payments via monthly, quarterly or semi-annual automatic bank withdrawals. The process has allowed our families to better manage their payment obligation. Beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year, all families utilizing FACTS will be assessed the $41 participation fee. In the past, OCS has paid the fee for each of the families utilizing the program, in essence passing on the cost to all OCS families. The cost savings in the budget allowed us an opportunity to minimize the tuition increase for all. This one-time yearly fee will be assessed by FACTS through an automatic ACH withdrawal.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org

God’s Peace!

Lent at the Elementary K-3 Campus

Every year for Lent, we all begin to think of what we are going to give up. This year, at the Elementary K-3 Campus we will be focusing on what we can give to help fill other people's "bucket".

The students have been reading the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? in their classrooms. They have learned about bucket fillers and bucket dippers.

"Bucket fillers" are those who help without being asked, do kind things for others, give hugs and compliments, and generally spread their love and good feelings to others. The simple metaphor of a bucket helps children understand the importance of consideration and love, particularly towards those who bully.

"Bucket dippers" rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying or doing mean things.

Each time students do something at school to "fill" someone's bucket, the teacher will put a candy heart into a small bucket in their classroom. Each time a classroom fills their entire bucket, they get to place a paper bucket on a graph in the cafeteria. We are looking forward to seeing how many buckets of kindness and love we can fill before Easter! This is our gift to Jesus to thank Him for filling our lives with hope by his sacrificial death on the cross.

Along with our Filling Buckets Theme for Lent, we will also begin each morning with a short meditation over the PA retelling the story of Jesus' journey to the cross. We will place a picture in the hall, just outside of the office, each day to remind children of the mediation for that day.

Each classroom will also go to the church every week for the Stations of the Cross, and teacher's will have different activities and lessons to teach children about the meaning of Lent and how it prepares us for the great celebration of Easter and Jesus' resurrection.

We pray that during this Lenten season you and your family will grow in your faith and in your love of Jesus and what He did for all of us!!

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Galatians 6:14

Parent-2-Parent Meeting at Our Lady of Lourdes

A Parent-2-Parent Meeting will be February 21st at 9:10am in the Lourdes Parish Hall. All parents are encouraged to attend.

The topic for this month will be, “The Season of Lent.”

‘Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues. This requires an apprenticeship in self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery—the preconditions of all true freedom. Parents should teach their children to subordinate the ‘material and instinctual dimensions to interior and spiritual ones.’’
Catechism of the Catholic Church #2223.

Director's Corner - Various Updates

Another snow day! I apologize again for the late OneCallNow notification last evening informing you that school would be closed today. I decided that the information was important and you would want to know as soon as I heard from DCPS. Earlier this morning, the snow was so beautiful with such big flakes falling from heaven. I certainly hope that our students enjoy another chance to make snow men, build snow forts, and go sledding. God bless them in their play and keep them safe.

Let me use this opportunity to update you on a number of topics.

Bishop-Elect Medley’s Ordination – No School
Several weeks ago the decision was made to close Owensboro Catholic Schools on Wednesday, February 10th for the Ordination of Bishop-Elect Medley as the 4th Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro. In my OneCallNow notification last evening I reminded you of that. Certainly, all are encouraged to attend. I ask that all OCS students who are able to attend wear their school uniform. For information concerning ways to watch the ordination via television or the internet, please refer to the Diocese of Owensboro website. May God’s blessing be with Bishop-Elect Medley as he accepts his new role as our shepherd!

School Calendar Issue
In my OneCallNow notification last evening, I referenced the possibility that given additional closures due to snow this week might cause us to be in session on Monday, February 15th. According to the DCPS calendar, the first five closures require days be added to the end of the calendar. The sixth day missed would require that we be in session on President’s Day. By my count, today is the fourth day missed. At this point, I promise to keep you updated via OneCallNow, In The Loop and school daily announcements. We will know more as we get closer to the end of the week on how the snow conditions will affect school closures.

New Home Raffle Update
I am pleased to report that the Home Raffle ticket sales have been steady since the formal announcement of the raffle in early January. Given that, we still have a long way to go to reach the 3000 raffle ticket plateau. Through the efforts of the Catholic Education Partners and our corporate sponsors, we continually work to expand our sales network. The more we involve in this important work, the better chance we have of achieving the goal of selling 300 raffle tickets and maximizing our profit. We need your help in expanding that base by agreeing to help sell Home Raffle Tickets. I invite all interested to attend a reception and information session on Monday, February 15th at 7:00 PM in the OCS Education Council Room (next to SCRIP SUCCE$$ at Central Office). A detailed update on the progress of the ticket sales and the home construction will be provided. Certainly, raffle tickets will be available for purchase. In the weeks leading up to April 10th, we need your insight and creativity. The potential outcome, providing a foundation for Catholic Education, is proofing to be an easy sell and is worth any and all effort. Please call Central Office at 686-8896 to let us know that you will be able to join us on the 15th. I especially thank all who have already stepped forward to both sell and purchase Home Raffle Tickets.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God’s Peace! See you on February 10th at the SportsCenter!

Cartouche – 8th Grade Art

Students prepared their own personalized Cartouche with their names written in Hieroglyphics.

A cartouche, in Egyptian hieroglyphs, is an oblong enclosure with a vertical line at one end, indicating the text enclosed is a deity or a royal name. The Ancient Egyptian word for it was shenu; the label cartouche was first applied by Napoleonic soldiers who fancied the symbol they saw so frequently repeated on the pharaonic ruins they encountered resembled a gun cartridge (cartouche in French).

Director's Corner - Catholic Schools Week - 'Dividends For Life'

Catholic Schools Week is a special time each year where the OCS community joins all Catholic Schools in the country in celebrating the important role we play in helping to fulfill the Mission of the Church. The theme chosen for Catholic Schools Week 2010 is 'Catholic Schools Dividends for Life.' According to Karen Ristau, president of the National Catholic Education Association, Catholic schools provide good things for students and families high expectations and daily experience of faith. In these challenging times, the theme also reminds parents that the dividends of a Catholic school education students prepared in faith, knowledge, morals and discipline last a lifetime. There is no better way to invest in a child s future or the future of our world.

To be honest, I am incredibly touched by the theme chosen for Catholic Schools Week. I find myself reflecting back almost 20 years in Wichita, Kansas as Kathy and I were deciding on an educational path for our three children. After much prayer and thought, we chose a partnership with our Parish school, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Like many of you, we based our choice on the values highlighted in the Catholic Schools Week logo Faith, Knowledge, Discipline and Morals. At the time, we hoped our family sacrifice would serve as a strong investment in the future of our children. As parents now of two graduates of Owensboro Catholic High School and an OCHS sophomore, we look back on that decision made so long ago knowing with all certainty that it was absolutely the right, and for us, the only choice. God has blessed us as a family as our children have grown as responsible persons of faith. Please know my prayers are with you and your family especially as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week this week.

On behalf of the OCS faculty, administration and staff let me say thank you choosing Owensboro Catholic Schools as your educational partner. We understand and celebrate the importance and sacrifice involved in that decision and pledge to do everything in our power to provide an educational experience built upon a foundation of excellence in faith formation and academics that will lead each student through life all the way to his/her eternal reward. Simply stated, our goal is to help you realize the greatest possible dividend on your investment. All week long, we as a faith community will remember you, your family and all in the OCS extended family in our daily prayers.

As is our tradition during Catholic Schools Week, we will gather to celebrate the Eucharist on Wednesday, February 3rd at 10:00 AM at the SportsCenter. We invite you to join us for this special opportunity to celebrate as the Owensboro Catholic Schools family. It is the one time a year we gather together as one, truly modeling what we are - Faith in Education.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God s Peace! See you on February 3rd at the SportsCenter!
