Director's Corner - OCHS Principal Announcement

Earlier yesterday morning I stood before the faculty at Owensboro Catholic High School and announced on behalf of the OCHS Principal Search Committee that Gates Settle had signed a Memorandum of Understanding to become the Principal at Owensboro Catholic High School beginning July 1, 2011. Mr. Settle, a member of Immaculate Parish, has spent the past 26 years serving students in Daviess and McLean counties as teacher, coach, Assistant Principal and Principal. For the past ten years he has served as Principal of Daviess County Middle School. Given the strength of his administrative background, his dedication to always doing what is best for students, and his desire to work in a Catholic faith-based environment that encourages growth in faith and knowledge, the search committee agreed it had found the next Principal of Catholic High in Gates Settle.

The committee was very impressed with the following statement that Mr. Settle wrote in his cover letter:

“My philosophy of education is pretty simple because it revolves around always doing what is best for the students. If their best interests are at the heart of every decision that is made, then the students will always benefit which contributes to maintaining a strong and effective school. I am also convinced that the relationships that are forged between adults and students are one of the most important aspects to having a successful school. The level of success that a school experiences is not about expensive programs that are available, or the newness of bricks and mortar in place, but about the people that are in the school. Students have to know and understand that the adults care about them, what is best for them, and are interested with what is going on in their lives. If all those elements are in place, then the stage has been set for successful learning to occur.”

As you read above, Mr. Settle will join the OCHS team in July of 2011. For the next year, he will continue to serve Daviess County Middle School as its Principal. We are working diligently to find appropriate leadership for Owensboro Catholic High School for the 2010-2011 academic year. Certainly our goal is to provide leadership that allows Catholic High to continue its tradition of providing excellence in faith formation and academics. As soon as this is finalized, another Director’s Corner will be written to announce the leadership plan.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Staples for his lifetime of service Owensboro Catholic High School and the Catholic community in Owensboro and Daviess County. His legacy and impact will absolutely stand the test of time. He touched many lives these past 38 years. May God provide many blessings to him and his family as he transitions to the next phase of his life!

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God’s Peace!

AR Picnic - Elementary K-3 Campus - Change of Venue

After much deliberation and discussion, we have decided to cancel the trip to Legion Park tomorrow. The forecast is calling for a big rain though Friday afternoon with scattered strong thunderstorms. Although there may be a break in the rain tomorrow, it is still going to be cool and the ground will be very wet.
We will still have AR DAY- it just won't be at the park. Teachers are planning games and activities throughout the day, along with a special movie and treat. Students may still bring a drink from home to drink with their treat in the classroom.

We apologize to all of our parents who took the day off. The AR Picnic at Legion Park is always so much fun for students, faculty, and our families, however we can't control the weather and all have to be flexible. Teachers will not need volunteers for the alternative activities they have planned, and we ask that students NOT leave school early, but leave school at regular dismissal time.
Please Note:Due to the volume of pre-ordered lunches and limited space in our cafeteria, the cafeteria will not be serving pre-ordered lunches to parents.

Director's Corner 'Drive One 4UR School' Event

As you read in recent issues of In The Loop, Ford Motor Company and Champion Ford Lincoln Mercury will be partnering with us to help raise money in support of Owensboro Catholic Schools as a part of Ford's Drive One 4UR School program. All friends of Owensboro Catholic Schools will have the opportunity to participate and help raise as much as $6,000 for OCS by test driving an eligible Ford vehicle from Champion Ford Lincoln Mercury on Saturday, May 22nd from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Ford Motor Company will donate $20 to Owensboro Catholic Schools for every person from a unique household who test drives an eligible Ford vehicle.
I encourage you to find a way to visit us at Champion Ford Lincoln Mercury on Saturday morning. Look for the tent around back on Southtown Boulevard and stop by to test drive a brand new Ford Lincoln Mercury car or truck. There will be no pressure to purchase, just a chance to test drive a new vehicle and help OCS at the same time. All who test drive a vehicle will be registered to win a Gateway LT20 Netbook.

Elementary K-3 Campus Reminders - May 17-21, 2010

Tuesday, May 18- PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL on May 18 due to the Primary Election

Thursday, May 20- Mass

Friday, May 21- 8:30-1:00- AR Picnic at Legion Park
On Friday, May 21 we will be taking the entire K-3 Campus to Legion Park for a picnic to celebrate our Accelerated Reader Achievements for the year. Following is a checklist of things to remember when getting your student ready on Friday morning:
~Wear "Faith in Education" shirts (new dark green with gold Aces preferred, but if you can't find it, any of the older Faith in Ed. Shirts are fine) with uniform shorts, skirts, or pants. This will make it easier to keep up with K-3 children.

~ Wear tennis shoes- NO flip flops, sandals, or open back shoes.

~Apply Sunscreen BEFORE leaving home. Teachers cannot apply sunscreen at school. We will be outside ALL day!

~Students may bring a hat to wear.

~Students may bring play equipment-balls, mitts, etc. NO skates, skateboards, or electronic equipment. Any equipment brought is the responsibility of the student, so if you do not want to lose it - don't send it! Anything brought should have the child's name clearly written on the item.

~Students should order a sack lunch from school unless they can't due to health reasons. It is too much to keep up with a lunch box. Parents are asked NOT to bring Fast Food to the park for their child.

~Students should bring a drink- Sports drinks with screw caps are preferred. NO sodas or cans. Put your child's name on their drink.

~Teachers will have a cooler for drinks. Along with drinks the students bring from home, we will also have a free bottle of water for each student with lunch. Milk and/or juice will not be served.
We will be leaving the school at 8:30 and returning at 1:00. Thank you to all who have already volunteered. Parents, who could not volunteer for the full day, are welcome to stop by Legion Park anytime during the day and visit with us! Parents who plan on checking their child out at the park, MUST sign the child out at the First Aid Shelter. Please take care of this early in the day, so that we do not have a long line when it is time to start loading buses.

Leadership in the Face of Fads!

In a world where society pushes our teens to follow the latest and greatest fad, or the “it” person, it refreshes the spirit to see one of our students doing everything she can to encourage those around her to do just the opposite!
Being a strong leader with a strong voice in not always the popular choice, but Jenna Ruth is that type of leader. If you have ever had any experience with the “middle school years” of a teen, you know the many changes they go through, both physically and emotionally. Jenna works hard at giving those around her a living example of how to navigate these many changes with the proper attitude.

She serves as Treasurer of the OCMS Beta Club whose 4 pillars are academics, service, leadership and character. She is also Student Council Representative. She is an active member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and earned enough service hours to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Right to Life march. She is a member of the Blessed Mother Youth Group and sings in the Worship choir at OCMS Masses. She also earns a place on our OCMS Honor Roll each quarter. And she plays softball for OCHS.
One of Jenna’s teachers, Julie Renshaw, commented recently that Jenna “excels in the classroom, always preparing for tests (and earning high marks) and always doing her homework. She takes part in every service project we do at OCMS, and she encourages others to do their best. She is truly an example of Christian service in word and deed.
Jenna is “an amazing leader in Beta Club” according to the club sponsor, Mary Cheshire. Mary also said “Jenna works hard with our service projects, and after we brought in 7th graders, she was great at encouraging them and helping them learn the ropes. She is a very polite young lady who is always willing to lend a helping hand.
Jenna is the daughter of John and Sheri Ruth.
