Football State Championship Day Make-up

All the way back in November, the Aces Nation gathered at Houchens Industries - L.T. Smith Stadium on the campus Western Kentucky University to watch our OCS Football team play for the state championship. What an awesome experience for all involved, even though our Aces did not win. To walk onto the turf and see a virtual sea of green and white from one end of the stadium to the other was simply amazing. It was an incredible bonding experience for all who were able to attend.

OCS will add five minutes to the beginning of the school day starting on Monday, February 7th and continuing to the end of the school year to amke up for this day. The new starting times for each building will be:
· Owensboro Catholic Elementary K-3 Campus - 7:40 AM

· Owensboro Catholic Elementary 4-6 Campus - 7:40 AM

· Owensboro Catholic Middle School - 8:15 AM

· Owensboro Catholic High School - 8:15 AM
Thanks in advance for your support and cooperation concerning this decision to extend our day by five minutes.

Praying the Rosary with Bishop Medley

Bishop Medley approached the Owensboro Catholic Schools with a project to recite the rosary, one mystery with students from each of the school sites. He was very excited about initiating the project and to hear the final product.

Bishop Medley commented, "I am pleased to present to the Owensboro community an opportunity to join me and the children of the Owensboro Catholic Schools to pray the Rosary. In inviting our children to lead the community in prayer speaks of the value in attending Catholic schools. This is a witness to the value in Catholic Education to the whole community."

The Owensboro Catholic Schools jumped on this idea and scheduled Bishop Medley to record the rosary.

Each school site chose the students to be part of the project. Bishop Medley visited with the students prior to recording so they could review how to respond to the prayers. He used a special rosary, a beautiful and vibrant red rosary, he had purchased in Lourdes, France. The students introduced themselves and their grade level.

Students from Owensboro Catholic Middle School recorded the Glorious mysteries. They were randomly chosen with some being from 7th and 8th grade. Those joining the Bishop were Olivia Cason, Hannah Hagan, Jacob Payne, Mary Eichholz, Zachary Haynes, Logan Buckman, Patrick Mills, Cecilia Crowe and Georgia McMaster

Students from Owensboro Catholic High School recorded the Sorrowful mysteries. Those participating were Carly Kaelin, Andrea McBride, Alex Dotsey, Brad Blincoe, Lindsey Whitehouse and Jack Wilson. They are all officers of the OCHS Right to Life group.

Students from the OCS Elementary K-3 Campus recorded the Joyful mysteries. Several students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade participated. Third grader, Ben O'Bryan, asked Bishop Medley to bless his rosary. The Bishop was pleased to do so. In addition to Ben were Lily Carol Moore, John Michael Frey, Alyssa Frey, Matthew Gray and Caitlyn Bell.

Students from the OCS Elementary 4-6 Campus recorded the Luminous mysteries. Those participating were Kelly Hayden, Meredith Stiff, Jade Flaherty, Jacob Johnson, Benjamin Conkright and Tricia Thompson.

The students really enjoyed the interaction with the bishop. He shared several stories with each group about reciting the rosary as a school when President Kennedy was shot and also about visiting the Pope and having his rosary blessed.

Each of the three local Catholic radio stations in the diocese will carry this broadcast. These stations are WSPP, Hopkinsville 93.5; WIMM, Owensboro 107.7; and WEUC, Morganfield (covers Henderson and Evansville, IN) 87.9. These recordings will air 4:30-5am and 8-8:30pm daily with the appropriate mystery. Currently, each recording last about 15 minutes so the rosary will be recited twice in each time slot. Matt Carrico of WIMM radio said, "We (WIMM radio) are very excited to offer our listeners a chance to pray with His Excellency." Karen Gross of the Owensboro Catholic Schools commented on recording the rosary at the school sites by saying, "It was great to see Bishop Medley share his love of the rosary with the students and see him interact with students of all ages."Also these recordings are available on the WIMM website at http://www.owensborocatholicradio.com/  for listening and downloading. The diocese is encouraged to listen and pray the rosary with the bishop and students.

OCMS FCA Trip to Washington DC - Still as Scheduled

The following is from David Ralph, FCA Faculty Sponsor:

I want to let everyone know that everything is still on for tomorrow. I have spoken with the bus company today and we both agreed that by 5:00pm tomorrow we will give a final assessment to all as to how everything stands. As of right now, we will be meeting at OCHS (the high school) at 11:45pm Friday night and hopefully pulling out of the parking lot by 12:15am.

Please be advised that we may have to alter plans a bit in terms of safety. There are absolutely no plans whatsoever to cancel the pilgrimage. We may need to take a different, longer route to DC, or we may need to delay leaving until daylight --- but we are definitely making no plans to cancel the trip. Interstate conditions determine safety, not the conditions of the roads in neighborhoods of Owensboro. Some have already asked if we have to cancel because school is closed tomorrow. There is no policy saying that for OCS. All decisions will be made based on safety alone.

Director's Corner - Chris and Julie Ford Family

The headline, startling picture, and accompanying article in this morning's Messenger Inquirer informed us that Chris and Julie Ford and their five children escaped their burning home last evening unharmed. Three of the children are enrolled as OCS students (6th, 4th and K) with two still at home. Earlier this morning, I spoke with Bev and Mel Howard, Julie's parents. At this point, the family is taking it one day at a time. They feel extremely fortunate and grateful that all are OK. Certainly, I assured them that their OCS family was interested in providing any assistance needed.

The family essentially lost everything in the fire. They are in the process of identifying a set of immediate and long term needs. As they sort through this, I suggest that we as OCS family provide help in the following ways:
· Provide Financial Assistance - If you would like to donate either cash or SCRIP cards to help the family, you can drop your donation at any of the school offices or Central Office/SCRIP. Please note that Central Office/SCRIP is open today until 5:00 PM. We will make sure that the donations get to the Ford family quickly to help them take important steps forward.
· Pray - Please join me in thanking our Father God for allowing them to escape the fire unhurt. We ask that God continue to shower on them the graces needed to move forward with peace in their hearts.
As more specific needs (clothing, toys, etc.) are identified by the family, we will pass the word via In The Loop.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.
God's Peace!
