Director's Corner - Mrs. Ann Flaherty Accepts Diocesan Position

Mrs. Flaherty It is with great sadness and a sense of excitement that I write to inform you that late yesterday afternoon Mrs. Ann Flaherty informed me of her intention to accept the position of Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Owensboro beginning July 1, 2012. Over these past four years, Mrs. Flaherty has with great dedication, immense purpose, and incredible fortitude served the students, their families and the faculty and staff of the Owensboro Catholic Middle School. Under her faith filled leadership, OCMS has experienced a transformation and renaissance noted by all. Most effected has been her students as they experienced a servant leader who lived the OCS Mission in all she did and with all she encountered. Over these past 21 years - 4 at OCMS, 16 at OCHS and 1 at Our Lady of Lourdes - she has served our students and their families with passion and a Catholic faith filled purpose. She has left her mark on their hearts. What an incredible testimony and legacy.

As I told her yesterday afternoon, what an exciting opportunity this is both for her and our Diocese. It is truly a "Win-Win" for all of us. I congratulated her on her new opportunity and thanked her for agreeing to take on a roll that will continue to benefit not only the Owensboro Catholic Schools community but all Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Owensboro. Excellent! Please join me in thanking Mrs. Flaherty for her tireless enthusiasm and ever present zeal for the students she so willingly and with such purpose has served. Also, let us share with her a heartfelt sense of appreciation for her willingness to continue to say Yes to God's call to serve.

The process of finding a replacement for Mrs. Flaherty begins immediately. In consultation with Fr. Brad Whistle and Mr. Jim Mattingly, a search committee will be established and a position announcement will be appropriately placed.

May God's blessing be showered on Mrs. Flaherty as she transitions from Principal of Owensboro Catholic Middle School to Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Owensboro!

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

Director's Corner - Pre-Registration and Surveys

Pre-Registration for the 2011-2012 Academic Year
As we enter the final week of Pre-Registration, I write to remind all who have not submitted their Pre-Registration Forms for 2012-2013 to do so. It is critical to have accurate enrollment counts in April as we begin to assess staffing needs for the new school year. I know for many the fact that Spring Break begins on Friday is at the forefront. I ask and implore that if you have not submitted your Pre-Registration Form that you find a few minutes while you are planning your week away to review, complete and submit the Pre-Registration Form, the $50 deposit and your Parish Voucher (if Parish Sponsored) no later than Thursday, March 29. As explained last week, our goal is to use the Spring Break Week to process as many of the forms as possible so that the assessment of staffing needs process can begin. I thank you in advance for your prompt response to this important request. Special thanks to all who have already completed their forms.

Parent Satisfaction Surveys
I also want to take this opportunity to encourage all who have not had a chance to complete the Parent Satisfaction Surveys to do so. As our Catholic Education partner, we value your input, insight and thoughts. The window to complete the surveys (one for each school) is Thursday, March 29th. We will be pulling and distributing the results to the Principals for review and evaluation following Spring Break. To access the surveys, please click on the links below. Thanks to all who have taken the time to share their valued opinions with us.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org

ITBS Testing Reminders - Grade 4, 5, 6

Students will be taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) by Riverside Publishing starting April 23rd. Teachers will put their individual testing dates on their weekly reports. Below are suggestions we feel will help your child do better on the test.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

1.  Make sure your child gets plenty of rest each night.

2.  Your child should have a good breakfast every day during testing. A study has shown that students who ate before taking tests scored better than those who did not eat anything.  Breakfast is available in the cafeteria 7:00 – 7:30 AM.

3.  Test will be given in the mornings, as much as possible. Your child must get to school on time 7:40. A student arriving late after a test has started will have to wait until the test ends before entering the classroom.

4. Your child should bring a HEALTHY NUTRITIOUS SNACK to eat each day during testing. Please do not send sweet or messy food.  Good snacks include:  fruit, trail mix, cheese, beef stick, peanut butter and crackers, pretzels, or dry cereal like Cheerios.  The cafeteria will also be providing the Power Break snacks each morning.

5. Your child needs to bring two (#2 lead) pencils with good erasers. Mechanical pencils should not be used on these tests.

6.  Your child should have a library book at his/her desk that he/she can read when waiting for test times to finish as all tests are timed.

7.  Please make sure that students are not out for other appointments during testing periods.  This will prevent the teachers from having to administer make-up tests.

8.  The fifth grade test is used as one source of data to determine placement for middle school classes during the student’s sixth grade year.

Please keep the students and teachers in your prayers especially during these testing days. Thank you in advance for helping us make this a good learning experience for the students.  We all want them to be successful.

‘Lose the Wheels’ Volunteer Spotters Needed

Lose The Training Wheels, Inc., a nationally recognized nonprofit organization, brings its innovative style of teaching children with disabilities how to ride a bicycle to Owensboro.  People with mental and physical disabilities typically have a more difficult time learning to ride a bike compared to their peers. Lose The Training Wheels’ 5-day camp provides each camper with approximately 1 hour of instruction each day using a series of adapted bikes and techniques. At the end of the camp, more than 80 percent of campers can successfully ride a conventional bike.

Are you looking for a rewarding experience?

What is a spotter?  Join GRADSA (Green River Area Down Syndrome Association) for an informative meeting to find out and see if you are up to the challenge.  Informational only, you will not be committed by attending.  Must be 16 years of age.  Volunteer spotters are a necessity in making “Lose the Training Wheels” a huge success!

If you are interested please join us:
Tuesday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the YMCA
Please RSVP by April 15th @ 270-925-0195 or info@gradsa.org

Director's Corner - Surveys

checklist With Spring Break and Easter just a few weeks away, we all are looking forward to the beauty and warmth that comes with Spring. We are ready and more than willing to be revitalized and reborn. My prayer is that we use these last few weeks of Lent in preparation for the resurrection that awaits each of us on Easter. May God bless you with the graces needed to see beyond the despair of not being worthy of the glories that await because our Lord and Savior died to save us and then rose from the dead. Glory is His name! How incredible is His love for each of us and for our wonderful Catholic school system.

Parent Satisfaction Surveys
We at Owensboro Catholic Schools appreciate the confidence and trust you place in us to educate your child/children in a Christ-centered, Catholic faith based environment. As our Mission directs us, we are committed to providing excellence in faith formation and academics.

A detailed report of the responses will be available for all to review. These electronic surveys will be open until Friday, March 30 so that you will have ample time to share your opinions and insights with us. OCMS Football Information

Owensboro Catholic Middle School Football begins its off-season athletic development program on Monday, March 12.  Athletic development is open to current 5th, 6th and 7th grade boys interested in playing football for the OCMS in the fall.  We will workout on Mon.-Wed.-Fri.  Beginning on March 12, conditioning will be behind OCMS (or in the gym depending on the weather), from 3:00 to 4:30pm, until spring football practice begins in May. Spring practice will continue on the M-W-F schedule.

We will be utilizing a new program that specifically focuses on the middle school age player, designed to develop a player’s overall athletic ability and core strength vs. strength training alone. Players will need to have a current KHSAA physical completed prior to participating in the program.

Students interested in playing football next season are encouraged to participate in the conditioning program/ Spring Practice.  This is an opportunity to begin to learn the offensive/defensive concepts prior to fall season, participate with other players in development and team building.

Since the majority of our offense is passing, Spring practice will focus on the passing game and defense of the passing game. We will then play in two 7 on 7 passing tournaments. I hope to have two teams participate at the KWC’s tournament on June 2th but will only take one team to UK’s tournament on June 9th.

Please contact me with any questions.

Please note:  We are getting additional invitations to compete in 7v7 passing tournaments for May and June.  I will get the final schedule as soon as it is confirmed.

Director's Corner - Storm Alerts, Pre-Registration and Financial Aid Notices

I think you will all agree that God surely blessed us last week. So many families and communities are suffering due to the outbreak of severe weather across our region. Certainly, we join all across our state and nation in prayer for the families who lost loved ones due to the tornados and wind. We count our blessings while asking our Father God to share the His graces and peace with those families in need.

I have already shared a thank you message with Mike Gray, Interim Superintendent of Schools for Daviess County Public Schools, for making the right call on Friday to release early. Although a bit chaotic, the early release allowed us to make sure all of our students were in the safety of their own homes before the outbreak of the storms. I have been asked to attend a DCPS Administration meeting this morning (Monday, March 5th) to evaluate all processes needed when an early release is anticipated. I told Mr. Gray that I would be happy to attend. I ask families of all bus riders to specially thank their bus drivers for acting with such professionalism and care on Friday. I know our students, especially the younger ones, were nervous and afraid as they walked out of school onto a bus knowing that the storm was approaching. The drivers and their assistants did an excellent job of calming the students as they provided a safe ride home.

I thank all of you who emailed and texted me concerning the One Call Now message on Friday. I appreciated the reminders. As I stated in the 2nd message I sent out, I did send one out at 11:05 that for some reason aborted. As you can imagine, the system was amazingly overloaded. Immediately after sending the message I left the office to help at OCES K-3 Campus with the early dismissal. Your reminders informed me that for some reason there was a problem with the sending of the first message and prompted me to send the 2nd message. Thanks to Karen Gross for sending out an In The Loop that effectively informed many of you of the early dismissal. I am working with One Call Now to figure out why the first message was not distributed.

Pre-Registration for the 2012-2013 Academic Year
Late last week, we mailed the Pre-Registration packet to all current and potential new families. Pre-Registration for the 2012-2013 academic year will continue until Thursday, March 29th. It is IMPERATIVE as we look forward to next year that all families submit complete Pre-Registration Forms along with the $50 fee and Parish Voucher (if necessary) prior to March 29th. As last year, we are anticipating an increase in enrollment. Having an accurate sense of our enrollment for 2012-2013 is integral in helping us make important and necessary decisions concerning our staffing needs for 2012-2013. I ask, actually I implore, that you take a few minutes to review the information on the form, complete the information on the back of the form and submit it prior to the 29th of March. Please note that Parish Sponsored families are required to attach their Parish Voucher to the Pre-Registration Form. If you did not receive the Pre-Registration Packet, please call or stop by the Central Office (686-8896).

Tuition Assistance Awards - Round 1
We are working with PSAS to ensure that the Round 1 Tuition Assistance Awards go out in the mail no later than Thursday, March 15th.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God's Peace!
