Director's Corner - OCHS Principal Announcement
Earlier yesterday morning I stood before the faculty at Owensboro Catholic High School and announced on behalf of the OCHS Principal Search Committee that Gates Settle had signed a Memorandum of Understanding to become the Principal at Owensboro Catholic High School beginning July 1, 2011. Mr. Settle, a member of Immaculate Parish, has spent the past 26 years serving students in Daviess and McLean counties as teacher, coach, Assistant Principal and Principal. For the past ten years he has served as Principal of Daviess County Middle School. Given the strength of his administrative background, his dedication to always doing what is best for students, and his desire to work in a Catholic faith-based environment that encourages growth in faith and knowledge, the search committee agreed it had found the next Principal of Catholic High in Gates Settle.
The committee was very impressed with the following statement that Mr. Settle wrote in his cover letter:
“My philosophy of education is pretty simple because it revolves around always doing what is best for the students. If their best interests are at the heart of every decision that is made, then the students will always benefit which contributes to maintaining a strong and effective school. I am also convinced that the relationships that are forged between adults and students are one of the most important aspects to having a successful school. The level of success that a school experiences is not about expensive programs that are available, or the newness of bricks and mortar in place, but about the people that are in the school. Students have to know and understand that the adults care about them, what is best for them, and are interested with what is going on in their lives. If all those elements are in place, then the stage has been set for successful learning to occur.”
As you read above, Mr. Settle will join the OCHS team in July of 2011. For the next year, he will continue to serve Daviess County Middle School as its Principal. We are working diligently to find appropriate leadership for Owensboro Catholic High School for the 2010-2011 academic year. Certainly our goal is to provide leadership that allows Catholic High to continue its tradition of providing excellence in faith formation and academics. As soon as this is finalized, another Director’s Corner will be written to announce the leadership plan.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Staples for his lifetime of service Owensboro Catholic High School and the Catholic community in Owensboro and Daviess County. His legacy and impact will absolutely stand the test of time. He touched many lives these past 38 years. May God provide many blessings to him and his family as he transitions to the next phase of his life!
I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.
