Owensboro Catholic Students Exemplify Service to Others

New for 2010, In The Loop will highlight the accomplishments of one of the many student leaders we have throughout the school system. This period publication will focus on current Owensboro Catholic students who by their actions show others what it means to be faithful servants to others.

In the inaugural edition we will focus on Kaley Robertson, a senior at Owensboro Catholic High School. Kaley is the kind of person who will do the right thing for the right reason, no matter what the "popular opinion" may be.

Kaley is president of the OCHS SCRUBS club. SCRUBS is an acronym for Students Creating Respect Using Better Solutions. She is the reason why so many SCRUBS projects were such a huge success; some of those activities included Red Ribbon week, OCMS Kick Butts Day activities for the Middle School students, Seat Belt Checks, and the Four-wheeler survey.

One of SCRUBS sponsors recently had this to say about Kaley - "She is a natural born leader, has the ability to get everyone's attention and cooperation, and has great, novel ideas. She is a problem solver. She is one who you can feel confident a task will get done when assigned to her. She not only marginally completes the project, but thoroughly, over-and-above completes the project. She coordinated and put together the first annual SCRUBS scrapbook last year. It is fabulous. She is humble, has strong morals and convictions, has self respect, and is not easily swayed by peer pressure."

In Kaley's spare time she is a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Right to Life Club, the captain of the Lady Aces basketball team, NHS member, among many other clubs/organizations and works part-time at Red Lobster.

She maintains above average grades in the classes she takes; including Advance Placement classes, and attended Governor's Scholar this past summer.

Kaley exemplifies service to others and what our expectations are for all of our students! Thank you Kaley for the leadership you provide and for the example you set for others.

Nadine Trodgen Receives Diocesan Stewardship Award

Sr. Agnes Catherine Williams, OSU, Stewardship Award: In recognition of a parishioner’s service/ministry to youth and education in the Catholic Schools and Parish.

This year’s recipient of the Sr. Agnes Catherine Williams, OSU, Stewardship Award has dedicated their life to teaching in the Catholic Schools for 25 years and before that in the public school system. So strong was her desire to teach that she went to school at night while her family was young and earned her Master’s Degree.

She has a special connection with children and tries to instill values and love of God in the hearts of her students. When out in public many former and current students come up and hug her in a way in a way that shows they have tremendous respect for her and a great rapport with her.

During the summer months she has been know to provide speech therapy to adults and children alike. She is truly one of those “little servants” who brings a special smile, spirit, and shine wherever she goes…be it at home, work, church or the community at large.

It is with great pride and humility we bestow the Sr. Agnes Catherine Williams, OSU, Stewardship Award for outstanding ministry to our youth and their Catholic formation upon Nadine Trogden.

Director's Corner - Bishop Medley's Ordination

On the morning of December 15th we awoke to the wonderful news that Pope Benedict XVI had chosen Fr. William F. Medley of the Diocese of Louisville to be the 4th Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro. Later that afternoon, Bishop-Elect Medley was introduced to the people of Western Kentucky at a press conference held at Brescia University. Like many who attended the press conference, I was incredibly impressed by Bishop-Elect Medley and his genuine love for his job as pastor and for the people he serves. Our prayer throughout the last year has been for the Holy Spirit to guide the search process to find our Diocese a new Shepherd and it was obvious to me that our prayers were answered. God truly has blessed our Diocese with the selection of Bishop-Elect Medley.

On Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 2:00 PM, Bishop-Elect Medley will be ordained and installed as our Bishop at the SportsCenter. Everyone has been invited. In an effort to make it easy for the entire Owensboro Catholic Family to attend, it has been decided to close school on February 10th. A variety of options were explored and it was concluded that due to the extraordinary nature of this event in the history of our Diocese and the importance of allowing all to attend and participate, the only way to proceed was to close school. It certainly is our hope that all members of the OCS Family, whether student, parent, faculty and administrator, will prayerfully accept this opportunity to witness an event that has only happened three times in our Diocesan history and may not happen again for many years. We understand that the 2:00 PM time will make it difficult for some, but we encourage all to find a way.

What an opportunity to showcase our Catholic faith for the entire Owensboro Catholic Schools Family, especially our students. As you can imagine, our faculty will use this special opportunity in the classroom to help the students better understand the important role a Bishop plays in the life of our Diocese and the Church. The Ordination event will provide a powerful faith and educational experience for all in attendance, again, especially for our students. It would be my prayer that each student who attends walks away with a positive sense of their Catholic faith and how it touches each in a real and vibrant way. I am convinced it will be a defining moment not only in their lives, but all of our lives. Due to the educational nature of the ordination, Diocesan officials have informed us that the day will not need to be made up.

I am truly excited about Bishop-Elect Medley and the role he will play in the future of Catholic education in the Church of Owensboro and Western Kentucky. I am eager for him to visit our schools, meet our students and faculty, and gain an understanding of our commitment system wide to fulfilling the Mission of the Church by Building the Body of Christ one student at a time. I want him to walk into the SportsCenter on February 10th and experience a warm and boisterous welcome that only a filled building can provide. So that he can pick out the OCS students, I ask that each student in attendance come wearing their school uniform.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God’s Peace! See you on February 10th at the SportsCenter!

New Home Raffle Sales Kickoff - Press Conference Today!

Catholic Education Partners of the greater Owensboro area today will launch ticket sales for the raffle of a new, energy efficient home to benefit the Owensboro Catholic Schools system.

Proceeds from the raffle will raise funds for technology and facility upgrades, operations in the current annual budget and tuition assistance. The campaign is titled "Building a Foundation for Catholic Education."

"OCS is incredibly grateful and appreciative for the support of the Catholic Education Partners and our corporate sponsors. The raffle proceeds will allow us to continue fulfilling our mission and the mission of the church by providing excellence in faith formation and academics," notes Ken R. Rasp, Owensboro Catholic Schools Director.

The 1,500-square-foot home raffle home is currently under construction in The Greens of Heartland development in Owensboro. Built by Jagoe Homes and valued at $150,000, the home has 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two-car garage and an enclosed, covered porch.

It is an ENERGY STAR certified home that meets EPA standards that make the home at least 15 percent more energy efficient than standard homes. More information and a photo of the home can be found at http://www.newhomeraffle.info/.

Raffle tickets for the home will sell for $100 each. A limit of 3,000 tickets will be sold. The drawing for the winner will be held on Saturday, April 10 at 10 a.m. at the Sts. Joseph and Paul Parish Hall, 609 E. 4th Street in Owensboro.
