Director's Corner - Thompson Family Support

As many of you know, the Geary and Rhonda Thompson family was involved in a serious automobile accident over the weekend. On behalf of the Thompson’s I thank the OCS family for the many prayers and the outpouring of support being sent in their direction. May God continue to bless them and provide them the grace to continue moving forward.

As a faith community, it is important that we rally to help them as they work individually and as a family to recover, refresh and rebuild. Please note the following ways that you and your family can help:

1. Through the coordination of Lorraine Riccio and Becky Evans, a “food tree” has been established to provide home cooked meals for the family. Please contact either Lorraine (316-4809 or lorriccio@aol.com) or Becky (302-9424 or raebecka9@hotmail.com) to volunteer to help by providing a meal.

2. A “benefit” account has been set-up for the Geary Thompson family at Independence Bank. You can visit any Independence Bank location and provide a donation.

3. Please continue to pray for the family.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God’s Peace!

SCRIP - New Regulations Require Greater Volunteer Participation

Due to new IRS regulations, SCRIP programs across the country are being required to run their programs with a substantial amount of volunteer help.

Our program has been blessed over the years with a good number of volunteers who have generously donated thousands of hours! For that we are very appreciative!

However, with the new regulations, we are going to need even more volunteers than ever before. SCRIP SUCCE$$ MUST comply with these regulations in order to keep the program as we know it!

If you or your parents can give a few hours a week, or month, then we will be able to meet these new requirements easily. Sign up at registration or call Melba at 852-8033 to volunteer. There are a variety of jobs you can sign up for that will help us successfully continue the program that has been such a blessing to our Catholic schools families.

Student Medical Form - Correction on Form

With registration only a few days away, many are making back-to-school preparations. Part of the process is completing the necessary paperwork for enrollment. The forms necessary for OCS registration became available on-line via the OCS website earlier this week.
However, there were a few items on the previously posted Page 2 of the Student Medical Form that needed to be clarified and corrected. Posted were the previous school year's approved over-the counter medication options. This list of OTC medications is reviewed and approved annually by our Medical Director. There are a few small changes on this year's approved list and want to make sure the current proper over-the-counter medications options as approved are posted for you to choose from . The revised Student medical form is now reposted and ready for you to complete. If you have already completed the Student Medical Form, you may keep the current Page 1 but will need to complete the revised Page 2. Sorry for any inconvenience.
The Dental Screening Form is also available online.

Jeffrey Freed - Guest Speaker

Several months ago the support group Families Supporting Learning Differences brought nationally renowned Jeffrey Freed to Owensboro and invited our teachers and administrators to attend the day long session. Mr. Freed consults with schools and families on strategies that have proven to work with ADD, Dyslexic, and visual learners. He has worked with over a thousand parents and dozens of schools across the country and around the world. Based on the incredible experience of those who attended the workshop, The Diocese of Owensboro Catholic Schools Office has invited Mr. Freed back to work with teachers and administrators from all Catholic Schools across the Diocese on Monday, July 26th at Immaculate. The focus will be on effectiveness in serving students with special needs.

Mr. Mattingly has asked that we inform our families that Mr. Freed will also host a session for parents of students with special needs from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Immaculate Parish Hall on the evening of July 26th. If there are questions about this special session for parents, do not hesitate to contact me. All are cordially invited.

Registration Notes

Earlier this week a brochure was sent via the mail to all OCS families detailing Registration and other important upcoming dates related to the beginning of the new school year. Additional copies are available at Central Office. Registration will take place on Wednesday, July 21st in the Small Gym at OCHS from 12:00 to 6:00 PM. All families are required to attend Registration.
If you are unable to attend, please contact the OCS Central Office or email Karen Gross at karen.gross@owensborocatholic.org

· Registration Forms: Over the past several years, we have worked diligently to simplify our need for the information provided in the many forms we ask you to complete as a part of the registration process. Again this year, I would like to point out a revision in the process that we think will make your registration process, and ours, much easier. Instead of asking you to re-complete Form A for each enrolled child, we will hand you a student profile sheet with the information captured in INow. We will ask you to review the information, including emergency contact information, make necessary revisions and additions, and give it back to us so that all information can be appropriately updated. All other forms are available on the OCS Website at www.owensborocatholic.org/forms  so they can be completed prior to Registration.
· FACTS Payment Plans: There are still families who informed us on their Pre-Registration Form that they would be meeting their tuition obligation via payments through FACTS and have not set-up their new FACTS account. We will have computers available at Registration so that this required action can be accomplished. I encourage all families needing to set-up this important account to do so prior to Registration. You can access the FACTS website at www.owensborocatholic.org/admissions  The OCS Tuition Policy states that all families are expected to meet their tuition obligation by one of these options: Full Payment at the time of Registration (less a 3% discount) or Monthly, Quarterly, or Semi-Annual Payments via FACTS. If there are issues that need to be discussed, I suggest that we meet prior to Registration. Contact me at 852.8028 or ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org
· Families Paying in Full: I remind that the OCS Business Office is open every day prior to Registration from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In order to simplify your registration experience, I encourage you visit us prior to Registration in order to make this payment.

· Families with Outstanding Balances: OCS Tuition Policy requires that prior to registration all outstanding balances are settled or a suitable plan be in place. I encourage all with a balance to make the appropriate payment prior to Registration. If you will have difficulty making the payment, a meeting with either me or a member of the OCS Business Office Staff is required. Please call Central Office at 686-8896 to schedule a time to meet. It will be easier and certainly more confidential to have this important conversation prior to Registration. Once the outstanding balance is current, the report cards for 2009-2010 will be released.
· Parish Vouchers: There are a few families who have not turned in a Parish Voucher. It is imperative that the voucher be submitted at or prior to Registration.
· Safe Environment: All adult volunteers in the Diocese of Owensboro who work with children (including all OCS employees and volunteers) are required to complete the on-line Safe Environment Training and a Background check every 5 years. Molly Thompson, the Coordinator of the Diocesan Office of Safe Environment, will be available in the small gym. Please stop by and check on your status.
