Director's Corner - Financial Aid Forms and Tuition Rates Mailed

All currently enrolled families should have received this week an envelope in the mail with information concerning the 2012-2013 tuition rates and tuition assistance process.  It was also mailed to anyone showing interest in joining the Owensboro Catholic Schools family.  It is our hope and assumption that all have received this important packet.  If you have not, please stop by the OCS Central Office or call us at 270.686.8896 and we will provide you with a packet.
As noted in the letter accompanying the information, the base tuition rate for 2012-2013 will increase by a modest 2% (compared to 3% for the current school year).  For a family with a one student enrolled K-12, the increase is $70 or $5.83 per month.  The increase for a family with one in high school, the increase is $120, or $10 per month.  Given the continuing uncertain economic times, every effort was made by all involved in building the budget (Central Office personnel, Principals and budget managers, and Finance Committee members) to minimize the tuition impact on our families while still allowing the opportunity to maintain and sustain excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics across our system.  Please note the following:

·         Your continued investment, along with all families who choose Owensboro Catholic Schools, will provide 56.7 % of the projected revenue need of $8,391,068 in the 2012-2013 OCS Budget.

·         Our parish sponsors and partners will provide 35.8% ($3,000,000) of the revenue need by way of Parish Subsidy.

·         Income from fundraisers (Bingo, World’s Finest Chocolate, Magazine Sales, and others), endowment earnings, and other means will provide 7.5% of the need.

The packet included a Student Aid Form from Private School Aid Service (PSAS) for those interested in applying for need-based tuition assistance.  We have set aside $910,000 in the budget to assist families who show need.  I highly encourage all who are interested to submit their Student Aid Form with the necessary documentation to PSAS prior to the first round deadline of February 15, 2012.  Our goal is to have aid award letters out prior to March 15, 2012.  Electronic versions of the Student Aid Form  and Tuition Information Sheet can be found on our websitePlease note:  By OCS policy, all aid to current families must be awarded by August 1, 2012.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics.  As always, your comments and insights are important to me.  I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

Sts. Joseph and Paul Parish 125 Year Celebration

When St. Joseph Church, located on 4th and Clay St., was demolished in 1989 and when St. Paul Church was refurbished, many religious articles were given away or salvaged and saved by parishioners. As the parish celebrates our 125th year and strive to build archives, the parish would sincerely appreciate the donation of any item that was once a part of the church or school, to be returned so they can be preserved and displayed for all to enjoy. Items can be returned to the parish office at 609 East 4th St.  If you have any questions please call 683-5641

Also, as part of the 125th Celebration, an ALL CLASSES-CLASS REUNION will take place on May 6 in the Sts. Joseph and Paul parish hall.

Director's Corner - Fr. Brad Whistle Named Episcopal Vicar

Fr. Brad Whistle
Several months ago, Fr. John Vaughan shared with the OCS Pastors and Education Council that he had informed Bishop Medley of his desire to step down from the role of Priest-Pastor for the Owensboro Catholic Schools.  I am pleased to inform you that Fr. Brad Whistle has accepted the appointment by Bishop Medley to serve as the Episcopal Vicar (formerly known as Priest-Pastor) for the Owensboro Catholic Schools effective February 1, 2012.  Please join me in thanking Br. Brad for his willingness to accept this important role.  Fr. Brad’s passion for Catholic education and support of the Owensboro Catholic Schools is well recognized by all – his brother priests, OCS school administration and staff, students and parents.  Speaking on behalf of the OCS Leadership Team and Education Council, we are eager to help and assist Fr. Brad as he adds the roll of Episcopal Vicar for the Owensboro Catholic Schools to an already busy and robust schedule.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to Fr. John Vaughan.  At the recent OCS Pastors’ meeting he was asked how long he had served as Priest-Pastor.  The answer was more than ten years.  For the five previous years he served as Priest Representative to the OCS School Board.  Much has been accomplished under his leadership and therefore there is much to be grateful for.  I am not sure there are adequate words to express the extreme level of gratitude and appreciation felt by all members of the Owensboro Catholic Community for Fr. John and all he has done to promote and support OCS these past 15 years.  May God’s blessings and peace be with Him as he takes on his new role as Vice President and President-Elect of the Canon Law Society of America!  Certainly our prayers will be with him.  He has assured me that his support of Owensboro Catholic Schools will not waiver in his continued role as a Pastor of an OCS sponsoring parish.

FYI – A committee headed by Fr. Mike Clark reviewed the nomenclature and suggested the change of title to Episcopal Vicar to more accurately reflect adherence to canon law.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics.  As always, your comments and insights are important to me.  I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

Now that winter is here, there is always a possibility that we could have a change in the school schedule due to weather conditions.

At this time we do not know what today will bring, but we wanted to make sure that everyone was informed of procedures in the event that we had to dismiss school early.

Please read over the following carefully:

1. IF school is dismissed early- it will be announced over the radio, TV, and the Internet. You will receive an automated phone call from OCS Central Office informing you that school is being dismissed early.

2. Please note: IF we dismiss early the AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM will also be CANCELED. Parents will need to make arrangements to pick their child up as soon as they get the information that school is being dismissed.

3. Unless we hear otherwise from you, children who normally ride the bus home, will be sent home on the bus. PLEASE NOTE: We only have ONE phone line that goes into the school, so if you call, it may take several times before you can get through.

4. Car Riders should be picked up at school as soon as possible. Car riders will be dismissed as usually from either the front or back. Parents do not need to come inside the school.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school.

FYI-Information in Case of a Delay in the Start of School
You also need to be aware of the procedure to follow, in the event that school begins later due to road conditions:

1. You will receive a ONE CALL automated message from OCS, letting you know if school is on a 1 or 2 Hour Delay.

2. For a ONE HOUR Delay- the school will NOT open until 8:00 AM.

3. For a TWO HOUR Delay- the school will NOT open until 9:00 AM.

4. Busses will still pick your child up and bring them to school if there is a delay- 1-2 hours after their normal pick up time.

If your child is a Car Rider, please do not bring them earlier than the time's listed above, or they will not be able to get into the school. We cannot open the doors earlier, since we want to give our faculty and staff time to get here safely as well.

If you have any questions, let us know.

Chinese Student at OCMS

Wei Zhen, a 12-year old 7th grader at Owensboro Catholic Middle School, received a standing ovation from students and others in attendance at a recent performance after a school OCMS Mass in Immaculate Church.

He has been studying piano for 9 years, and met Dr. Diane Earle at Shanghai Conservatory. Wei Zhen was a student in the preparatory department, and Earle came to Shanghai Conservatory in 2009 to perform and teach. Elementary 4-6 Campus Catholic Schools Week T-Shirt Design

During Catholic Schools Week each year we ask each family to create a t-shirt design featuring the CSW theme. Information concerning this project will be going home tomorrow! T-shirt designs must be turned in the Tuesday of CSW.

This year, our focus has been on "Gratitude" and keeping in mind all the wonderful things and people God has put in our lives. Last quarter students wrote down specific things they were grateful for on our display in the front of school. For example: the smell of my grandfather, my mom's hugs, my teacher's smile, etc.

For this quarter, we are asking our parents to write one thing they are grateful for pertaining to our Catholic School. We ask that you follow the student's examples above and be specific with your statements. You will place your statement on hearts which are being sent home in your CSW packet. The hearts may be turned in ASAP and will be placed in our front display. We appreciate all you do and want to hear from you!

Elementary K-3 Campus - Habitat for Humanity- Pails of Nails Project

Today we are sending home information with your child about a Service Project we are starting next week. See below for more information:

The 2012 Theme for Catholic Schools Week is Faith, Academics, and Service. For the Service Portion of CSW the K-3 Campus is going to sponsor a "Pails of Nails" Drive.

Owensboro Catholic High School will be sponsoring a house for Habitat for Humanity. The K-3 Campus can help too! Although our students may be too small to actually help "build" the house, we would like for the students to do things they CAN do around their own house to earn a little extra money. They can do good deeds or special chores- it is up to the parent.

Each time that your child does a deed or chore worthy of notice, it would be wonderful if you could "pay" your child for these good deeds. It doesn't have to be a lot. You can even give them your loose change!

At the end of Catholic Schools Week on February 2, all of the money collected will be given to Habitat for Humanity for the purchase of "Pails of Nails".

We believe as a Catholic school we should share our love, faith, time, and talents with the community. Catholic Schools Week is a perfect time to teach our children the importance of following the actions of Jesus, by sharing, caring, and helping others.

The Drive will last for TWO WEEKs. It will begin on Tuesday, JANUARY 17 and end on Tuesday, January 31. We will present our "gift" to Habitat for Humanity at our PEP Rally during Catholic Schools Week on February 2.

Elementary K-3 Campus - Reminders

Car Rider Dismissal

We want to get our NEW YEAR off to a great start, and we need your help with our afternoon Car Rider Dismissal.

There are some folks who are not following the appropriate dismissal procedure for CAR RIDERS, so we want to remind everyone of what to do to ensure the safety of all children.

After you have your child and are safely in your vehicle, you must wait in your car until school personnel give the "ALL CLEAR" for cars to leave before leaving the Parking Lot. Cars CANNOT exit out Placid Place Drive. If you are in the parking lot, you must exit out Steele Drive in an orderly manner.

If you are parked in the side parking lot by the Day Care, you CANNOT back out of your parking space until school personnel signals that the lot is clear. It is difficult to see small children if they are still trying to get into their parents cars. You must also exit out Steele Drive.

For those of you who park on Time Drive in the Church Parking Lot. You must walk over to the school and escort your child to your car. Remember that the Time Drive Parking Lot is not a supervised lot, so please watch your children closely when getting back into your vehicles.

Thank you for your help in this matter. If you have questions, let us know.
