Director's Corner - OCHS Football Aces

Congratulations to our football aces on their Semi-State win Friday night against the Danville High School Admirals. Way to go coaches and players on an excellent victory over a formidable opponent. Almost as impressive as the game was the number of Aces fans in attendance. There certainly were more wearing Aces green in the stadium than wearing Admiral blue. Way to go Aces Nation for driving the distance and braving the cold to cheer our football Aces to victory.
Now it's onto the state championship game against the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds at 3:00 PM on Friday at L. T. Smith Stadium on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
With great confidence about the outcome of the game, I met with the Principals last week to discuss how we would approach the State Championship game that would occur on a school day at 3:00 PM. After careful deliberation and review of many scenarios and options, the decision was made to close on Friday, December 3, 2010 across Owensboro Catholic Schools. Our intention is to make-up the day prior to the end of the school year. At the point the plan is finalized, it will be communicated to all members of the OCS family.

Please Note - OCS Central Office and SCRIP SUCCE$$ will also be closed on Friday.

As publicized, SCRIP SUCCE$$ will be open on Saturday, December 4th from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the OCES K-3 Campus.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.
God's Peace!

Community Campus to offer High School/Workforce-Aligned Academies

Class of 2012/2013 students and parents invited to Information Night

6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, November 29, at Blandford Auditorium on the main campus of Owensboro Community and Technical College, 4800 New Hartford Road

Parents and high school students (classes of 2012/2013) are invited to attend an information meeting at 6:30 p.m. November 29 at Blandford Auditorium on the OCTC campus to learn about this innovative idea to transform high schools in our region!

"Community Campus" is a model of what high schools across the nation may look like in the very near future and the future starts NOW for our kids!

Leaders from regional school districts, including Daviess County Public Schools, Owensboro Public Schools, Owensboro Catholic Schools and Hancock County Public Schools, will join representatives from Owensboro Community and Technical College and economic development officials, regional employers and community leaders to unveil the Community Campus program. This innovative high school model will create five workforce-aligned academies designed to provide students with a personalized learning experience that goes far beyond the walls of a classroom or the traditional "school day." The Community Campus concept allows students to embrace learning across the community, facilitated by practicing professionals.

Students will have the opportunity to explore their areas of interest, their passions and skills in this revolutionary education experience that unifies high school and college. Academies focus on entrepreneurship/business; life science; science technology and engineering; construction, trade and energy; and the arts.

The future is here and it starts with YOU. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this important meeting! For more information, contact Stacy Edds-Ellis at stacy.edds@kctcs.edu

OCHS Guest Verification Form for Dances

The “Turnaround Dance” is scheduled for November 13th. Owensboro Catholic High will start a new policy for quests who will be attending with an OCHS student for all dances. Any sophomore, junior or senior attending one of the remaining OCHS dances and will be bringing a student from another school, will be required to have an OCHS Guest Verification Form filled out and returned prior to the dance.

The form will include the proper dress code for the dance and the rules for all OCHS dances. The form will have to be filled out and signed by the parent, student, and a school administrator of the guest’s school. Anyone attending Owensboro Catholic High’s dances must at least be a sophomore, but not yet 21 years of age.

The OCHS student bringing a quest will be responsible for that quest’s behavior and dress. Please make sure that all guests are well aware of our dress code and our rules governing our dances. The form must be returned by mail (with the sending school’s seal) or by fax from the sending school. OCHS Administration reserves the right to make a judgment on admittance of quests based on the contents and receipt of the guest verification form. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school 684-3215.
The form must be picked up in the attendance office by the OCHS student, Mrs. Johnson is keeping track of who is requesting one.

Kenergy Corp's Frankfort/Washington Youth Tour Program

The 2011 program will be entirely Web based. Students will communicate directly with Kenergy’s Member Services team via e-mail.

To apply, students will send to us an e-mail message that includes their names, addresses, phone numbers and Kenergy account numbers. The latter is very important. Only Kenergy members are allowed to compete for the trips. Students will submit a 1,000-word essay, with the subject to be announced.  All essays will be delivered via e-mail to the Member Services team.
The same students who are selected to go to Frankfort will go to Washington, D.C. That number will be announced later. It will be at least four students, but may be as high as six.
The process will begin around December 1st.

NET CETERA - Chatting with Kids About Being Online

Thanks to Chris and Julie Ford, OCS has been given 1500 copies of the booklet NET CETERA - Chatting with Kids About Being Online. Written for parents, the booklet is an excellent resource concerning our children and the "on-line" world in which they live and interact. Our plan is distribute the booklets this week, one per student, and ask that they be brought home for your review.

Please ask your student(s) about the booklet to insure that it truly makes it way home. We encourage you to review the booklet and begin a conversation with your student(s) about appropriate 'on-line" behavior. We hope you find the booklet useful.

Accelerated Reader - Upgrade to the Enterprise Edition (Web-Based)

We are pleased to announce that over Fall Break, a major upgrade to the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program was installed for use at the OCES K-3 Campus, OCES 4-6 Campus and OCMS. Operating from a web-based environment, the Enterprise Edition of AR will allow our students access to a vast array of pre-configured tests. Based on the test results, our faculty will have access to information that will help them better understand the strengths and challenges of each of their students. The reporting functions are greatly enhanced and easily accessible.

Please note that the AR Reading List is now available via a link on the school site website.

All information taken from tests taken during the 1st quarter by each student was successfully moved and is available in the Enterprise Edition. If there are specific questions about this exciting enhancement to our educational program, please direct them to our Librarians/Media Specialists or Principals.

Director's Corner - Establishment of Taskforces

On the first day of school we were able to happily announce an increase in enrollment. That positive news coupled with the outstanding ACT scores of our 2010 OCHS graduates, certainly is a testament to all as we work as partners - family, parish and school - to fulfill the OCS Mission. From my vantage point, we are obviously moving in a positive and purpose filled direction. Success breeds success, but it is not something to be taken for granted. Our task now is to continue the work of continuous improvement while we celebrate the many blessings given us by God our Father.
I would like to announce the establishment of four taskforces. Each taskforce has been asked to step back, assess, evaluate, review and strategically plan. Made up of OCS staffers, parents, OCS Education Council and standing committee members, each taskforce will submit a report detailing their important discussions and recommendations and initiatives for the future. The final reports will be reviewed by the Leadership Team, appropriate standing committees, and ultimately the Education Council for help in plotting a strategic direction in each area. The four areas chosen for review are:

· Technology - Susie Alvey, Dan Goodwin, Jim Hartz, David Kaysinger, James Mayfield, Penny Melton, July Patton, David Ralph (Chair), Harold Staples, & Lori Whitehouse

· Fundraising - Todd Brock, Julie Cox, Karen Danhauer, Dan Heckel, Kevin Kauffeld, Carl Lewis, David Marshall, Keith Osborne (Chair), Kurt Osborne, Chip Pride, Gates Settle

· Math Readiness - John Calhoun, Lisa Castlen, Debbie Durbin, Ann Flaherty (Chair), Diane Fulkerson, Hank Harvey, Tony Kraus, Maryann Medley, Brittany Payne, Al Thompson

· Special Needs Students - Janice Clark, Beth Clements, Tabitha Clark, Bev Howard, Jim Mattingly (Co-Chair), Bill Mills, Melissa Osborne, Tom Payne, Ken Rasp, John Teets (Co-Chair), Vickie Warren.

Please join my prayer in asking that the Holy Spirit guide the important work of each taskforce.
