Director's Corner - Swine Flu Information

I am sure that all of you have been following the news concerning the Swine Flu outbreak in Mexico, with some cases being reported in parts of the US. The Commissioner of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has provided a set of directives to the public and health care providers concerning this potential pandemic event.

The Green River District Health Department has created a summary of these recommendations and has asked us to distribute it to the OCS family. A copy of that summary is written below.Green River District Health Department is closely monitoring the evolving situation related to the potential swine flu outbreak. GRDHD leadership has stayed in close contact with Dr. Hacker, Commissioner of Public Health, and the experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As of this publication (9:45 am, 4/27/09), there is NO SWINE FLU reported in Kentucky.

Public Health is asking citizens to take simple preventative measures to try to stay healthy.
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, your sleeve or material when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and wash your hands.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol- based hand cleaners are also effective.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way!

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
· Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
· If you do get sick, the CDC and GRDHD recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. For more information, log on to the following websites:
http://www.healthdepartment.org
www.cdc.gov

Any person who suspects they may have swine flu should immediately contact their physician.

Any physician treating patients with influenza like symptoms are asked to contact the Kentucky Public Health Departmental Operations Center at 1-888-398- 0013 for guidance.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission to provide excellence in faith formation and academics in a Christ-centered environment. As always, your comments and insights are important to me.

Director's Corner - Fundraising

As we close in on the end of another successful school year, I am awed by spirit of volunteerism and stewardship that is so much a part of the OCS experience. I thank God our loving Father for the graces that He showers on us as a response to the many who gives so much. The sense of ownership that allows all to feel so much a part of fulfilling our Mission certainly is something to be celebrated.

World's Finest Chocolate Fundraiser
Many thanks first to all who participated in what turned out to be a very successful World's Finest Chocolate fundraiser. Our goal was to raise $23,500 in profit from this fundraiser. I am pleased to report that our profit for the 2008-2009 WFC Fundraiser was $26,816. Again, thanks to all who helped to make this such a success program.

Race for Education
I thought I would also use this opportunity to thank all who so generously responded concerning the "Race for Education" fundraiser. I am grateful for all the label names provided and the many sponsoring contributions received. I am excited to report that we are quickly closing in on our goal of generating $50,000 in profit. Please note that it is not too late to send in a donation for our "Race for Education." Donations will be accepted through Friday, May 22nd. Again, thanks to all who have used this special opportunity to help us provide excellence in faith formation and academics at an affordable cost. I thank you in advance for supporting our students as they walk.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission to provide excellence in faith formation and academics in a Christ-centered environment. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org

OCS ACRE Test Scores – Outstanding

Once again, OCS students have exceeded national averages in all areas of the ACRE test. The ACRE (Assessment of Catholic Religious Education) test is an assessment of religious education, proficiency, and practices given by the Owensboro Catholic Schools to students in grades 5, 8, and 11 in February of 2009.

The four major divisions of the Catechism
Part One: The Profession of Faith
Part Two: The Celebration of the Christian Mystery
Part Three: Life in Christ
Part Four: Christian Prayer, recall the fourfold division of the Catechism of the Council of Trent (also called the Roman Catechism) promulgated in 1566.

This structural arrangement often referred to as the Pillars presents a succession of movements: The Church believing, celebrating, living, and praying.

Owensboro Catholic Middle School Students Make Service the Center of Their Lenten Journey

OCMS students performed several Lenten projects. Each week was focused on a different project.

Week One of Lent was spent cleaning up the cemetery on the corner of Griffith Avenue and Lewis Lane. David Ralph and Mark Woodward spearheaded the effort with the help of our FCA students and a few parents who volunteered to help with their chain saws! Because of damage from the recent ice storm, debris and limbs needed to be removed. Drive by and see the improvement!

Week Two found all of the OCS system participating in the 15th Annual Food and Personal Care drive sponsored by the OCHS National Honor Society. Proceeds went to the St. Joseph and Paul Food Pantry. All homerooms were generous with their donations, and Mrs. Brittany Payne's homeroom collected the most supplies of paper products, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene items. They were rewarded with a no homework pass!

The Beta Club of OCMS sponsored a recycling project for Week Three of Lent. Old cell phones, ink jet cartridges, digital cameras, and laser jet cartridges, and Ipod mp3 players were donated. Students in the Beta Club under the direction of Ms. Mary Cheshire, boxed up the items to be recycled as a "Green" project. The 8th grade brought in the most items and will be given a jean day on Friday, April 17.

Bucks for Boulware were the focus of the 4th week of Lent. Students were allowed a non-uniform day in exchange for a dollar donation. $225.00 was collected and presented to the Boulware Mission - a home for the homeless!

Spring break fell during week 5 of Lent, but the OCMS community sprang back into action in week 6 - Holy Week - with a collection called Cereal for St. Joseph's Peace Mission. Boxes of cereal, pop tarts, and sugar were donated for this worthwhile endeavor.

Thanks to our entire faculty and students for taking part in our Lenten service projects! We will continue to do good works and be stewards of God's planet.

OCS Elementary Fun Fest Open House Highlights

A Fun Fest-Open House was held at each of our elementary school sites.

Current and potential families were invited to attend! We had an exciting fun filled time with Big Air inflatables, a sock hop with a DJ, face painting, games and activities. We also had pizza and soda. While students had fun, parents met the principal, the teachers, went on a personal tour of the school with a mentor family, and learned more about what OCS has to offer.

The Owensboro Catholic Schools family has something pretty special and we wanted to share it with potential families!

Many thanks to those involved in making the events such a success!
Our students who invited friends to the event, our faculty and staffs for being present at the events to make our guests feel welcome, our families who are great ambassadors of our faith and schools, OCHS National Honor Society students who assisted in various aspects to help with our guests, our vendors who made the event so much fun with their expertise.
View the video of highlights from the events.
