OCMS Weekly Reminders - February 28-March 4, 2011

Tuesday, 3/1:

  • Beta Club offficers will meet before school at 7:45 in Ms. Cheshire's room.
  • KUNA meeting at 7:40 a.m. Please be in the cafeteria or gym on time.
  • Reminder to 7th graders who are joining Beta Club, registration and t-shirt money are due to Ms. Cheshire no later than Friday.
  • All Beta Club members will meet after school until 3:45. 7th graders who are planning to join are also welcome to attend this meeting.
  • PTO meeting 7:00 p.m., OCM cafeteria.  We will be hosting Detective Kevin Kabalen from the OPD Criminal Investigation Division as a speaker on Internet Safety especially in the areas of how to protect and supervise your child's use of social media sites and how to protect your child from Cyberbullying.
Wednesday, 3/2:
  • Community Problem Solving will meet from 3:00 to 5:00.
  • AYL presentation to all students at 9:00 a.m..

Girls Basketball Win District Title, Advance to Regional

 
ocs Lady Aces capture District title in 54-47 win over Daviess County. They now advance to Regional tournament.

Congratulations to Mary Kate Clemens, Becca Greenwell and Lauryn Yevincy for being named to the All District team based on regular season play.

The Regional Tournament begins on Monday, February 28. On Monday OCHS Lady Aces will play at 7 pm at the Sportscenter.

At the OCS Elementary K-3 Campus each breakfast your child eats at school qualifies them to put their name in for a basketball.
One girl’s name and one boy’s name will be drawn at the end of the month.

Straight Laced Band to Perform on St. Jude's Hospital Phone-a-thon

 
violin The band, Straight Laced, will be the "Celebrity Guests" on WBKR, 92.5FM tomorrow, Friday, February 25 from 3-5 PM, CT.

Band members are Emily Wills and Jenny Beth Wilis, both freshmen at OCHS and Quinton Pence of DCHS.

They will be playing music live and answering the phone for the phone-a-thon that supports St. Jude's Hospital and the fight against cancer in children.

Call 1-800-201-8883 and talk to the kids. Even if you can't give a lot, it will thrill them if you call. They are very excited about the potential of making a difference in the lives of kids much less fortunate than them.

Straight Laced is also in the finals of the Ohio Valley's Got Talent Contest at Henderson Community College, this Saturday, February 26 at 7PM. Open to the Public.

OCHS Academic Team Compete in Regionals, Advance to State

 
Book Congratulations to the following academic team members on their Regional competition finishes and now advance to State competition.

The Future Problem Solving Team is also advancing to state for the first time in OCHS history with their 2nd place finish in the Regional competition. The team included Ann-Claude Rakotoniaina, Allen Rakotoniaina, Michael Crowe and Alex Riccio.

OCMS Math Counts Team Earns Second Place

Math Counts Congratulations to the OCMS Math Counts team who competed at Kentucky Wesleyan College.

They placed second overall in the competition held on Saturday, February 19. Hannah Hagan earned first place out of 74 participants. Hannah Hagan won a $500 scholarship to her choice, UK or UL.

The team will be competing at state on March 25 and 26.

The Math Counts team consists of Hannah Hagan, Meredith Bickett, Sam Booth and Logan Brown. The team is coached by Hank Harvey.

Owensboro Catholic Elementary School Open House

 
An Open House will be held at the Elementary K-3 Campus and the Elementary 4-6 Campus for all prospective families on Thursday, March 10 from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
Information about daily faith formation, curriculum, and extracurricular activities and the athletic programs will be available, as well as a chance to meet the teachers and staff. Be sure to attend!

Great Backyard Bird Count - Elementary 4-6 Campus After School Program

Bird Watching Fourth graders in the Extended School Day Program at Owensboro Catholic Elementary 4-6 Campus learned to identify some common birds in Owensboro area for the 14th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count which was held nationwide February 18-21.

They studied photos of different birds, listened to bird calls, watched a short film of backyard bird watching, enjoyed a gummy worm, and had a great time on a Friday afternoon with Daviess County Audubon Society volunteer Winny Lin. The national bird count, co-sponsored by the Cornell University School of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, provides data for scientists.

OCHS Cheerleading Squad - 3rd Runner Up in KAPOS State Competition - Large Co-Ed



Congratulations to the OCHS Cheerleading Squad - 3rd runner up in Large Co-ed Division - KAPOS State Competition held on Saturday, February 19 in Bowling Green.

Members of the squad include:

WOMI 1490AM A new sports talk show, Sporting Times Radio Show with Doug Thompson, starts tonight on WOMI 1490 AM from 5 pm until 6 pm.

Tonight's guests for the initial show will be Becca Greenwell, Mary Kate Clemens, Lauryn Yevincy and Coach Ray Zuberer. They will be on the air between 5:30 and 6.

Bunco Night to Benefit OCHS Project Graduation

dice Bunco Fundraiser on February 26 at Immaculate Parish Hall from 6:00-9:00 pm.

Cost is $25 a couple or $15 for single.

You may bring your own cooler with your name on it. Finger foods/hors d'oeuvers/appetizers will be provided.

Proceeds to benefit Project Graduation for OCHS Senior Class. Project Graduation is a party following graduation to allow the students to celebrate and keep them safe.

OCHS Boys Basketball Game vs. Apollo - Rescheduled for Tuesday, February 15

The Owensboro Catholic boys basketball team will play Apollo in a VARSITY ONLY contest on Tuesday, February 15 at the Sportscenter beginning at 6 pm. This is to make up the game that was postponed from an earlier date due to snow.

Brescia University is also scheduled to play at the Sportscenter following our contest. Brescia has invited all our fans to stay and watch them.

OCMS Academic Team - 2nd Place in Regional Governor's Cup

Congratulations to the Owensboro Catholic Middle School Aces academic team on their second place overall win in Regional Governor's Cup competition on Saturday, February 12, 2011.

All individual winners and the entire quick recall team advance to State Governor's Cup competition on March 12-14, 2011, in Lexington, Kentucky.
The OCMS quick recall team won 2nd place after scoring victories against Providence Elementary School and twice against College View Middle School. OCMS advanced to the championship round and lost to Holy Name School.

Quick recall team members are Meredith Bickett, Sam Booth, Logan Brown, Matthew Caldwell, Evan Christodoulou, Leslie Kuntz, Lucy Kurtz, Jack Padgett, Madeline Rafferty, and Adney Rakotoniaina.


Individual honors go to the following students who placed in the top 5 in written assessment testing:

Meredith Bickett - 1st place Arts and Humanities, 3rd place Social Studies

Audrey Wright - 2nd place Arts and Humanities, 4th place Science

Elementary Volleyball Camp

A volleyball camp for girls from 2nd thru 6th grade held at Owensboro Catholic High School on February 21-23 from 6-8:30 pm each evening. This camp is designed to get the girls ready for Elementary school league (for the grades 3-6).

The camp will be held by OCHS Head Coach Brain Hardison and Steve Howard.

Cost is $40 includes a t-shirt. Registration will be held the first day of camp.

Lady Aces Capture All 'A' Classic State Basketball Title

Congratulations to the Lady Aces on winning the All 'A' Classic State Basketball Title.  They defeated Monroe County 65-60 in Richmond, KY.

Becca Greenwell was named the tournament MVP.  Mary Kate Clemens, Laura Riney and Leah Greathouse were named to the All Tournament Team.

OCHS Academic Team Members Advance to Regionals

The OCHS Academic Team competed in District Saturday January 29th.


The following individuals have qualified for Regional competition:

Math: Chase Carrico

Language Arts: Ann-Claude Rakotoniaina and Sabrina Storm

Social Studies: Matthew Jacobs

Science: Justin Magnuson

Composition: Stephanie Dooper -2nd place; Sarah Beth Caudill 5th place

7th Grade Boys Basketball Team Win Diocesan Tournament

Congratulations to the 7th grade Boys Basketball team on winning the Diocesan tournament this past weekend. They defeated St. Mary of the Woods, Whitesville for the championship in overtime.
Other teams in the tournament were: St Joseph's, Bowling Green; St Mary, Paducah; Holy Name, Henderson and St. Romuald, Hardinsburg.
Members of the team are:
Nolan Elder, Daniel Jacobs, Ray Zuberer, Isaac Settle, Paul Reid, Luke Reid, Mason Robertson, David Scott, Luke Payne, Cameron O'Bryan, John Augenstein, Noah McCormack, Jonathan Garner
The team is coached by Mark Gentry, Alex Bumm and Paul Mattingly
Congratulations to Ray Zuberer, Cameron O'Bryan and Luke Reid for being named to the All Tournament team.

OCS Used Uniform Sale

The Used Uniform sale will be held on Saturday, February 26 from noon to 3 pm at the Elementary K-3 Campus.
 
Uniforms for grades K-12 will be available for $2.00 per item.

 
Donations of gently used items including shirts, pants, shorts, skirts and sweatshirts are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at any of the school offices.

 
Volunteers for set up and take down are needed! We need help at the Elementary K-3 Campus:
  • Sorting: Thursday, February 24 at 6:00 pm
  • Set up Saturday, February 26 at 9 am
  • Take down following the sale at 3 pm

OCHS Band Members Participate in WKU Honors Band

Congratulations to the following OCS band members who participated in the Western Kentucky University Honors Band weekend. It was held January 27-29. Those participating were: Erin Ballard, Wren Osborne, Megan Alvey, Hunter Steele, Michael Decker, Emily Rose

The students rehearsed with nationally renowned conductors and presented a concert at Van Meter Auditorium on Saturday, January 29

The band is directed by Mr. Ed Hauser and Mrs. Katie Hauser.

Boys Basketball Finish All ‘A’ Classic Regional Runner Up

The Boys Basketball team lost to Edmonson County to finish Regional runner up in the All ‘A’ Classic Regional tournament.
Congratulations to Leo O’Nan, Jonathan Higdon and Zach Devine for being named to the All Tournament team.

Chase Kauffeld was named All Academic.
