Important News For Parents of 7th Graders:

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) standardized achievement testing for 7th graders will begin on Tuesday, April 19, and continue through Thursday, April 28. On April 19-20, students will complete the Cognitive Abilities Test; April 26-28, students will complete the ITBS Complete Battery. On days in-between, students will be entering demographics on answer sheets and completing practice tests.

PLEASE try not to schedule outside appointments during testing. Making up tests requires students to be pulled from classes and miss out on valuable instructional time.

Also, it is very important for your child to get plenty of rest and eat a healthy breakfast. Finally, your child may bring a healthy snack on April 26-28 -the three rigorous days of testing, e.g. peanut butter/crackers, fruit, dry cereal or cereal bar, granola bar, etc. To prevent interrupting testing sessions, students must have snack with them before testing begins. NO candy and NO drinks will be permitted.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Director's Corner - Pre-Registration Update, FACTS Payments and Parish Vouchers

Pre-Registration Update

Thanks to all who have submitted their pre-registration form for the 2011-2012 academic year. We are excited about the opportunity to serve as your Catholic education partner.
I am excited to inform that we currently have 1255 students pre-registered for 2011-2012. If we add the 75 students who are currently enrolled and have yet to pre-register our projected first day enrollment would be 1333 students. Please remember our first day enrollment count in August 2010 was 1285 students. What wonderful news. Last year at about this time we were looking at 1225 students pre-registered and a projected enrollment of 1256. As last year, every effort is being utilized to maximize our enrollment by working with current families not pre-registered and new families still working through the important discernment process of enrolling in one of incredible schools. Please note the following:
• Our Kindergarten class will be the biggest in many years. We currently have 128 Kindergarten students pre-registered. I am reminded by both Mrs. Whitehouse and Mrs. Gross that there other potential kindergartners in the pipeline.

• The number of new students pre-registered is already 138 (76 of these students come from current families and 62 from new families). There are new students enrolled in every grade across OCS. The OCS family will grow with the addition of 60 new families. Both the new family and new student number will grow as we approach Registration (Tuesday, July 26th) and the first day of school (Wednesday, August 10th).
FACTS Update
Those families who informed us on their Pre-Registration Form that they would be meeting their tuition obligation via payments through FACTS, please note the following:

Current FACTS Families – We roll your FACTS account over to the new academic year. We are almost to the point where we will be posting to your account the amount of tuition owed for 2011-2012 (family tuition amount minus tuition assistance). Once your account has been finalized, you will be notified by FACTS of your payment amount (monthly, quarterly or semi-annually) and when to expect their one time yearly fee of $38.00 to be deducted from your checking or savings account.

New FACTS Users – OCS Tuition Policy states that all families are expected to meet their tuition obligation by one of these options: Full Payment at the time of Registration (less a 3% discount) or Monthly, Quarterly, or Semi-Annual Payments via FACTS. To set-up your FACTS account, please access the FACTS website through the OCS website at www.owensborocatholic.org/admissions. If you would like assistance, please visit the OCS Central Office. A computer is available for your use and we would be happy to help you through this important process. If there are questions, please contact us at 270.686.8896.

Parish Vouchers
There are a few families who have not turned in a Parish Voucher. It is imperative that the voucher be submitted at this time so that the appropriate tuition amount can be assessed to each family.
I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.
God’s Peace!

MADD's Power of Parents: It's your influence - A message from MADD

This Thursday, April 21st, is the first annual PowerTalk 21(TM), the national day for parents to start talking with their kids about alcohol.

Looking at research and talking to parents, we found that a lot of parents wanted to have a conversation with their children about alcohol, but didn't know where to start...or how to answer the tough questions. Dreading saying the wrong thing, some parents said nothing at all.

So we wanted to create a national day for parents to start speaking with their kids about alcohol - that's this Thursday. But more than that, we wanted to give parents the tools to protect their children from the dangers of drinking.

With the generous support of Nationwide Insurance, we developed the Power of Parents, It's Your Influence(TM) handbook, which is available free of charge online at
http://support.madd.org/site/R?i=ZDqRuZQkZkDt6YH8vW3p6g

This handbook, based on research from Dr. Robert Turrisi of Penn State University, can reduce your child's risk of drinking by up to 30 percent.
We also created free, half-hour workshops to help coach parents through this tough conversation. You can find one at http://support.madd.org/site/R?i=k4I_w0-m3kluG9vMCUDMGg

We could really use your help to expand the parent program this year; please consider a donation to help support Power of Parents at
http://support.madd.org/site/R?i=rbPoxaioh2XtorPNVK_rbA
Thank you for your support and please forward this to any parents you know who could use this vital information at
http://support.madd.org/site/R?i=2wTADV86J3PRtQbyzUHHuQ

Thank you,
Laura Dean-Mooney

Community Solutions for Substance Abuse – Ordinance Reading at City Commission Meeting

During the Fall of 2010, our Mayor directed the City Commission to consider allowing alcohol in Ben Hawes Park. After a planning session, he tabled the idea until the new Commission came on board.

This issue has resurfaced. The Mayor is looking at a comprehensive ordinance that will not only allow alcohol at Ben Hawes, but will also allow the City Manager to decide on allowing it in other parks and City of Owensboro managed locations as well. There will be an ordinance read at the next City Commission meeting on Tuesday, April 19 at 5:00 pm at City Hall.

Before the Fall election, Community Solutions group sent out a link to a survey of the public regarding substance use in our community and received over 1,000 responses. Over 97% of the respondents said that they did NOT want alcohol in the parks and want them to remain "alcohol-free."

You may attend the City Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.

Live Owensboro Catholic Softball Play-by-Plays Available Online

New GameChanger web and mobile scorekeeping technology lets fans follow real-time game action.

Officials from Owensboro Catholic announced today that live play-by-plays and stats for every varisty game this season will be made available online through a new technology called GameChanger. Now fans, local media and other team followers can follow the team’s online “GameStream,” even when they can’t be at the field.

Too good to be true? Here’s how it works: Owensboro Catholic scorekeepers use the GameChanger iPad application to physically score each game. Every play and update recorded by the scorekeeper on the iPad app – yes, every hit, run and strike – will be instantly posted online where registered fans can follow the action. Dozens of post-game statistics are also automatically compiled for every player.

“Live online game feeds have always been reserved for the big leagues – until now,” said Ted Sullivan, co-founder of the GameChanger technology. “The ability to now ‘watch’ a local youth game while you’re at work or in a business meeting is absolutely priceless – just ask any working parent with a kid on the field. We’re excited that Owensboro Catholic is bringing GameChanger to community fans.”

Owensboro Catholic fans can sign up to follow the Lady Aces Varisty action here: http://www.gamechanger.io/team-2635913 . In addition, updates every half-inning and the final score will be made available via the OCS Twitter account at www.twitter.com/ocsaces .

Follow the Lady Aces!

Thank You from the Chris and Julie Ford Family

On January 16, our family lost everything in a house fire, but, with the grace of God, we escaped with the most important things - our lives and the lives of our children. We want to thank the many people who have helped us since then. Our friends and family in the OCS system have donated clothes, money, toys, food, and prayerful comfort to us and helped us to stand on our feet.

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of all of you, and we want you to know that you are in our prayers. We continue to believe that our children are receiving the best possible education in our OCS schools, and this ordeal has just reaffirmed that the faculty and staff, students, and parents are committed to service and to demonstrating God's love.

You all have also helped us teach our kids the value of faith and the grace that comes from giving and receiving. We have truly seen Christ and have felt the hand of God through each of you. We offer this prayer for each of you today.

Thank you, Father, for having created us and given us to each other in the human family. Thank you for being with us in all our joys and sorrows, for your comfort in our sadness, your companionship in our loneliness. Thank you for yesterday, today, tomorrow and for the whole of our lives. Thank you for friends, for health and for grace. May we live this and every day conscious of all that has been given to us.

(From the American Catholic prayers site)

Chris, Julie, Allie, Elizabeth, Johnathan, Olivia, and Elijah Ford
