Fat Tuesday – Elementary K-3 Campus

Every year each 3rd grade student at the K-3 Campus designs a colorful Alleluia Banner on “Fat Tuesday”.

The students go outside and have a brief prayer service, placing their “Alleluia’s” in a can, where they are burned, and buried. Church tradition doesn’t allow Catholics to say or pray the Alleluia during Lent.

The day after Easter, the 3rd graders will dig up the can-…. And just as through Jesus’ death and resurrection he “made all things new”- when the students dig the can up, each child will find his or her Alleluia whole again and ready for them to go out and Proclaim the Good News that Jesus Christ is Risen!

The return to the price being a $1 and the selling of the variety pack has our families really excited about making this one of the most successful WFC sales ever! The day we had to turn our order in, we ordered 535 cases based on the number of permission forms turned in plus additional cases we anticipated on being able to sell.

More cases have been ordered so keep selling. We anticipate receiving a shipment by Friday, February 20. If you need additional cases to sell, simply leave your name with your child's school and we will get them to you as soon as they come in.

URGENT MESSAGE - Whooping Cough

Yesterday afternoon we were informed by Janie Cambron, the Regional Epidemiologist of the Green River District Health Department that a student at the 4-6 Campus had positively been diagnosed with Pertussis, or Whooping Cough. She encouraged us to resend to all of our parents information concerning Pertussis.

Because of its highly contagious nature, I encourage all parents to review the attached information sent to us for distribution by Janie. The letter, FACT SHEET and information concerning the Tetanus Vaccine will be sent home later today with all students who attend the 4-6 Campus.

We encourage you to pay special attention to the FACT SHEET. If you or any member of your family show any of the symptoms, it is important that you be tested and appropriately treated. The information is not meant to alarm you, but rather for you to be educated on and be watchful of any symptoms associated with this disease. We are thankful to the Green River District Health Department for their help and support.

Please let me assure that we are working diligently to provide necessary education concerning Pertussis with the faculty and administration at each of school sites. Sherry Krampe, the OCS Student Health Coordinator, has provided excellent training for all involved. Of particular importance is her assistance in assuring that our classroom environments are clean and bacteria-free.

Special thanks go to Sherry and our Health Techs for all the special gift of service they provide to our students and their families.

2008-2009 School Calendar

OCS has missed 7 days of school because of the Ice Storm.

The DCPS website states the following concerning the 2008-2009 calendar:

· We will be in session on Monday, February 16th. The date will be used as one of the days missed.

· The last day of school for 2008-2009 is currently listed as Friday, June 5th.

We realize that there is much speculation concerning the forgiveness of some of these lost days. It is obvious from recent articles in the Messenger-Inquirer that there is discussion of this in Frankfort. Until a decision is made that would allow forgiveness of days, our last day of school will be Friday, June 5th.

OCS Elementary 4-6 Campus to Participate in 'Lincoln in the Land of Bluegrass'

"Lincoln in the Land of Bluegrass" musical on February 12 with one free show at 9 am for school children and another show at 7 PM for the general public at RiverPark Center's Cannon Hall ($5 adults, $3 students, at the door) to support not only the bluegrass museum but also this ambitious and creative community collaboration celebrating the life of one great native Kentuckian - Abe Lincoln - set to music in the style created by another great native Kentuckian, Bill Monroe.

This is our history set to the music of our culture -- created, composed, and performed by community residents of all ages. Over 300 students at three local schools -- Catholic Elementary 4-6 Campus (representing Catholic schools), Newton Parrish (representing City Schools), and Country Heights (representing County schools) wrote some of the songs and will be performing their original creations in the production. Students from Foust have created choreography for the finale and will dance it, as well, with vast energy.

Kevin Thompson and Emily Wills, both from OCMS, are also part of the production.

The musical will be highlighted with an Abraham Lincoln Exhibit on loan (for that day only) from the KY Historical Society, installed in the lobby of RiverPark Center.

Also performing are Theatre Workshop of Owensboro actors, Randy Lanham's Bluegrass Band and Barry Lanham's Foot Stompin' Express clogging troupe.

Contact Representatives and Senators - Transportation

As we finally head back to school, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with those members of the OCS family who are still without power. Please do not hesitate to contact the Central Office or school to let us know how we might be of service to you and your family. We are eager to provide assistance and support in any way possible. May God bless you and share with you an abundance of grace and fortitude.

Last January I wrote a Director's Corner concerning the need to contact our state legislators concerning funding for the Transportation Subsidy. I thank you for taking action. At the Faithful Citizen Forum held on January 24th at St. Pius X attended by Senator Boswell, Representative Thompson, Representative Glenn, and Representative Dorsey we were informed that the many comments they heard from you concerning this issue were important and positive. It helped them frame their opinion based on the insight of their constituents.

The time has come again to communicate with our legislators concerning this important issue. The Catholic Conference of Kentucky (CCK) is urgently asking that each OCS teacher and parent contact their legislators so that this important benefit is not reduced or lost in the budget negotiations. We certainly heard at the Faithful Citizen Forum that all is on the table. I certainly left concerned about the fate of the Transportation Subsidy as the General Assembly attempts to balance the budget. Here is a link to the CCK website.

Please click on the TAKE ACTION button on the right side of the page.

Click on the TAKE ACTION button concerning the transportation issue.

Use the page that opens to share your message of support for the Transportation Subsidy. Please note that your message will only be sent to your particular Senator and Representative. The message provided by CCK can be edited so that a more personal message can be inserted.

It is important for you know that Senator Boswell, Representative Thompson, and Representative Glenn all stated their public support of the Transportation Subsidy. I suggest in writing to these legislators that we thank them for their support and encourage them to work with their colleagues on this issue. The following has been suggested as some wording to add to the beginning of the CCK message:

Dear Senator/Representative, Thank you for your support of safe transportation of non-public school students. It is very much appreciated. I respectfully request that you communicate that support to other legislators so that funding for this program is not cut during the 2009 session of the General Assembly. Our local legislators understand the many benefits that strong Catholic Schools bring to our community, and it is very important that all Kentucky legislators hear that message. For those of you who are more comfortable placing a call or sending a personal email, please find attached a link below to the contact information for all legislators from Northwest Kentucky.

I thank you in advance for your positive and urgent response to this request for action. I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission to provide excellence in faith formation and academics in a Christ-centered environment.

As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God's Peace!
Ken R. Rasp
