Weekly Reminders Elementary 4-6 Campus March 29-April 1, 2010

We are about to enter into the Triduum, the holiest days of the year. The Triduum begins on the evening of Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord's Supper when we recall that Jesus gave his body and blood and taught us to care for others when he washed the disciples' feet.

The Triduum continues on Good Friday with the celebration of the Lord's Passion as we remember Christ's sacrafice for us.

On the night of Holy Saturday, we celebrate the great Easter Vigil, when our Savior bursts out of the tomb, and on Easter Sunday we continue to celebrate the Resurrection with great joy. On these days, together with Christians all over the world, we remember the final events in Jesus' earthly life: Jesus' Last Supper, his Passion, Crucifixion and death, and his Resurrection.

Monday, March 29 -Report Cards due! Students may begin bringing in items for the OCS Annual Food Drive.

Tuesday, March 30-Chrism Mass at the SportsCenter at 6:30 pm.

Friday, April 2- Good Friday! No School!

Acadmic team members need to make sure the following books have been turned in to Ms. Carr or Ms. Alvey: Dictionary of Cultural Literacy or 6th grade Spectrum Workbook. If you need to turn these books in, please do so ASAP.

Weekly Reminders - Elementary K-3 Campus March 29-April 1, 2010

Holy Week
Throughout the next four days each classroom will focus on the significance of this week in our Catholic Faith. As we prepare for the Last Supper, Jesus' Death on the Cross, and His Glorious Resurrection we remember that this is the MOST IMPORTANT week in our faith.

Throughout Lent your child's class has gone to church every week for the Stations of the Cross. This is a beauitful tradition in our Catholic Faith to help us remember the last day of Jesus' life on earth. Ask your child to tell you about one of the stations he remembers best.

For the past few years we have been in school on Good Friday and have had a Prayer Service. This year, we will not be in school on Friday and will not be having any school-wide services at church.
We encourage everyone to check with your parish and attend the Holy Week services offered.

Every year during Holy Week all of the OCS Schools participate in a Food Drive, sponsored by the National Honor Society at Owensboro Catholic High.

All proceeds will go to the Sts. Joseph and Paul pantry. NHS Students will pick up all items on Thursday.

We will be taking orders for the Elementary Yearbook now through April 16. If you would like to have one, please fill out the envelope and send it to school with $15.

Also attached to the newsletter you will find information about ordering Summer Bridge Workbooks for your child. The Teachers Aide Store is offering these to the schools at a discounted price. These are terrific workbooks to keep children's minds "sharp" throughout the summer months. We will be offering a special incentive/prize to students who complete the workbooks over the summer and return them to school!

FACTS Payment Setup Update

I apologize again for the inconvenience caused last week as many of you attempted to set-up your 2010-2011 payment plan with FACTS. I am pleased to inform you the glitch has been worked out and the website is now live.
Please note the following:

· On the opening page, the first question you are faced with concerning being a returning user or a new user. Because we are using this web based interface for the first time, please click on Get Started under New User.
· Enter student information for each student enrolled in OCS.
· As a part of the set-up process, you will establish a user name and password to maintain your on-line account and agreement information. Click on the link to review a sheet that details the FACTS Consumer Portal.
· Please select to print or email your confirmation page. It includes your agreement number which will be needed when referencing your tuition payment plan with OCS and FACTS.
· After you have submitted the information, the OCS Business Office will link your family tuition amount (minus tuition assistance if applicable) to your payment plan information. It is at that point that your account will be posted to the FACTS system. The nonrefundable FACTS enrollment fee of $38 will be automatically processed from your account with 14 days. Once posted, you will receive confirmation from FACTS, via email or mail, that the account was posted and the date the fee will be withdrawn from your account.
· I also will keep posted as to when we begin the process of posting tuition amounts in FACTS. Our priority right now is processing Pre- Registration Forms and posting Round 1 tuition assistance award amounts.

Lenten Clothing Drive

Several months ago, we were approached by RiverValley Behavioral Health asking for help. A local not-for-profit, RiverValley has been a stabilizing, nurturing force for our community. They host over 21 Kentucky based programs that include in-patient and out-patient services for those with mental health, mental retardation/developmental disabilities (MR/DD), alcohol and drug addictions, prevention, recovery and treatment. They care for children, adults and their families. Regularly children are assigned to RiverValley Behavioral Health Hospital that arrive only with the clothes on their back. RiverValley does all that it can to provide clean clothing for them while they are with them.

They have asked us to partner with them by hosting a clothing drive where OCS families have the opportunity to donate gently worn clothing items and shoes for children ages 14 - 18. We will host the drive from Monday, March 22nd to Friday, March 26th.

Your clothing donations can be dropped off at any of our school sites and Central Office. For those dropping off clothing at Owensboro Catholic Middle School, please go to the gym. RiverValley will be picking up donations each day between 8:30 and 9:00 AM. This is a perfect opportunity to clean out the drawers and closets and help those in need. All donations are tax deductible. Pre-printed receipts will be available at each location. Thank you for your help in this matter.

FACTS Update

In a recent Director’s Corner you were informed that beginning in 2010-2011, those families who meet their tuition obligations via automatic ACH withdrawal via FACTS would be assessed the $41 participation fee. Since contracting this service to FACTS for the 2005-2006 academic year, this fee has been absorbed by OCS and passed onto all families as a part of the operational budget. Please note the following:

• In building the 2010-2011 OCS Budget, the Finance Committee worked diligently to minimize the impact of a tuition increase on our families. Every line in the budget was examined and evaluated. By passing the cost of FACTS to the users, the potential increase for all was cut by a .5%. To be honest, there were many tough decisions prayerfully approached with a sense of stewardship.

• FACTS has been a valuable partner over these past 6 years. The ACH payments have allowed our families to efficiently manage and budget their tuition payment obligation into automatic payments, in most cases stretched over 12 months. On the OCS side, these automatic payments have helped us better manage cash flow through the year and simply and appropriately track payments through an interface between FACTS and our billing software.

• FACTS is upgrading for 2010-2011 and we are going to advantage of it. Families will have greater access to FACTS via a secure website. Each family will be provided a username and password. For 2010-2011, we will ask all families to go on-line and set-up their payment schedule. We have requested additional information from FACTS about this and will provide it to all families later in the spring.

• The OCS tuition policy requires that a families’ tuition obligation be met via the following ways: full payment prior to registration (less a 3% discount; monthly, quarterly, semi-annual ach payments via FACTS, or credit card payments to OCS.

2010-2011 Pre-Registration

The Pre-Registration packets will be mailed early this week. As previously announced, Pre-Registration for the 2010-2011 academic year go from Monday, March 15th to Friday, March 26th. Please not the following important changes in the process:

• Current families will be given a Pre-Registration Form to review instead of complete, your information, taken from InformationNow, will be pre-populated on the form. We ask that review the information, mark necessary revisions, and add appropriate information before you sign it and submit it with the $50 deposit.

• For Parish Sponsored families, please attach your Parish Voucher for 2010-2011 with the Pre-Registration Form when you submit it. All of our parishes have agreed to issue the vouchers for the next school year with pre-registration.

We are excited about the many opportunities to streamline processes and simplify gathering and storing of important information now that we have one comprehensive database. Certainly one example of this is our effort during Pre-Registration to ask you to review information instead of complete information that we already have. To be honest, we need your help in making sure that the information we have is correct. The conversion from multiple databases not aligned in any way with each other to one unified database used by all has not been easy. In many ways, it continues. Our goal is make sure that the data is correct and each family is correctly aligned appropriately. At this point, I know that all is not correct and I apologize for that. Please help us by sharing where revisions need to be made.

Tuition Assistance Process Update

Due to the weather in February, we announce an extension for filing the PSAS Student Aid Form to March 1st. This past week, Julie Cox, the OCS Director of Business Affairs, spoke with the folks at PSAS concerning the time table for Round 1. It seems that the extension of the filing deadline worked.

Many of you took advantage and were able to get you Student Aid Form completed and filed with all necessary documents. To allow PSAS ample time to process all of the submitted forms, they have asked that we extend the reporting deadline by one week.

Instead of getting the Round 1 letters in the mail on or before March 15th, we will get them in the mail to you on or before Monday, March 22nd. Our goal is to award all completed applications at that time.

New Home Raffle Update

The sales of the raffle tickets have moved beyond 1000 sold and are moving toward 2000 sold. As you remember, we want to sell 3000 raffle tickets at $100 per ticket to achieve the maximum profit to benefit Catholic Schools. Much thanks to all, especially our partners at Sts. Joseph and Paul Parish and Jagoe Homes, for the many efforts under way to market this wonderful opportunity to impact Owensboro Catholic Schools for years to come. There is one month left and much to do. Every effort will be made to maximize raffle ticket sales.

The home is finished inside and out. Open Houses, with live remotes by WBKR, are scheduled for Saturdays, March 13th and 27th from 12:00 to 4:00. Please stop by. Encourage other to use this opportunity to visit. Others who achieved successful home raffle fundraisers have suggested that Open Houses create enthusiasm and positively impact sales.

Over these final weekends prior to April 10th, we hope to be selling tickets after Masses at each of our sponsoring parishes. We need plenty of volunteers to accomplish this task. Please call the Central Office (686-8896) and let us know t hat you would be willing to help to sell raffle tickets after Mass at your Parish.

Over the weekend the Jagoe Homes staff sold raffle tickets at their booth. You probably know people who would buy a raffle ticket if they were asked. Please ask! Raffle tickets are available at Central Office for you to sign out and sell.

If you have not purchased a raffle ticket, prayerfully consider it. The winner has many options: move in, become a landlord, sell the property and make an incredible profit to name a few.

2009-2010 School Year Calendar

Based on seven days missed because of inclement weather, Daviess County Public Schools announced recently that the last day of school was going to be Wednesday, June 2nd. Our last day of school will be Tuesday, June 1st. As you remember, it was announced OCS would close on Wednesday, February 10th to allow all student, families and staff to attend Bishop Medley’s ordination,

At the time, Diocesan officials informed us that because of the extraordinary reason for the closure that we would not need to make up the day. Due to the snowy weather, DCPS was forced to close schools that day. After much discussion internally and consultation with Diocesan officials, the decision has been made to honor the initial decision to not make up the day.

At this point and with no additional closures due to inclement weather or other extraordinary circumstances, the last day of school for Owensboro Catholic Schools’ students will be Tuesday, June 1st.

Important Information - OCMS Pickup Traffic

All OCMS parents who pick up their children at dismissal are asked to NOT form a double line coming into the Immaculate parking lot in the afternoons.

There should only be a single file of cars waiting to form one of the four lines to pick up their children. If there are two lines in the drive into the parking lot, the busses are NOT able to get into the lot. This endangers the privilege of having busses pick up our students. Thanks for your cooperation.

OCS Retirements at Year End

Each day I am reminded of God’s blessing because of the work of so many who give so much. I thank God daily for each of you and all members of the OCS family. Your continued dedication and commitment to helping Owensboro Catholic Schools fulfill its Mission is what allows us the opportunity to provide what we believe is an exceptional educational experience for our students, one that is truly Catholic and of the highest academic quality.

Earlier this afternoon, Mr. Harold Staples announced to the faculty and staff at Owensboro Catholic High School his intention to resign at the end of this contract year. I am certain the staff received this news with a sense of congratulations and sadness. Mr. Staples has given his life to Owensboro Catholic High School. I have heard him tell groups on many occasions that there is nothing more important to him than OCHS. He affectionately refers to all who are associated with it as part of “the family.” Mr. Staples accepted the position of OCHS Principal in 1991 after serving as a faculty member, coach, and administrator for 19 years. All told, he has enthusiastically served the faculty, staff, students and parents at OCHS for 38 years. There are not enough words to say thank you. His legacy will certainly stand the test of time through the many students that he has so positively touched.

As you may know, Mr. Ben Thompson and Mr. Jan Gary will be retiring at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year. Over the years, Mr. Thompson for 40 years and Mr. Gary for 38 years, have blended a genuine love for their students with a teaching style crafted to provide a firm foundation for academic and life success. Each is a master teacher dedicated to helping students realize their potential. We will sorely miss these two professionals and their approach to student learning and achievement.

Please join me in thanking Mr. Staples, Mr. Thompson and Mr. Gary for their untiring service to this Catholic community. I ask that God share a special blessing with each of them and their families as they look toward this new phase in their lives.

The search process to fill these important positions will begin in earnest immediately.

Your comments and insights are important to me. I encourage you to keep them coming. I can be reached via phone at 852.8028 and via email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

God’s peace be with each of you!

Free Practice ACT Available for OCHS Juniors

Owensboro Catholic High School is partnering with Sylvan Learning Center to provide a FREE practice ACT test for the high school juniors. The test will be conducted on Monday, March 8, 2010.

Parents can help their sons and daughters prepare for this test by reminding them to take this free opportunity seriously and encouraging them to do their best.

Results will be available about two weeks after the test is administered. Parents should review their children’s scores and talk to their students about areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. Students should be encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to make improvements before taking the test again.

The free ACT is being made available to OCHS students through Sylvan Learning Center. After the tests have been scored and submitted to OCHS, parents will then have the option of contacting Sylvan for a more in-depth conversation about their students’ score and/or meeting with a Sylvan representative on site at OCHS. Sylvan also offers individualized tutoring and ACT Prep Courses, but there is no obligation involved with this service.

Again, we are pleased to be able to partner with Sylvan and offer this opportunity to our high school juniors. We want to express our appreciation to parents and community partners who support our expectation of success for all students.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Principal, Kurt Osborne, at 684-3215.
