Seatbelts Save Lives!

Even with seat belts being mandatory in the state of Kentucky, a vast majority of people choose to disregard this safety precaution and end up losing their lives because of it. The national average for seatbelt usage in 2010 was 85%.

Remember to buckle up every time you get in the car, even if it is for a short drive. Most wrecks occur within 5 miles of the home. Also, don't remove your seatbelt until after the vehicle has been safely stopped and parked.

OCHS Members of SCRUBS conducted a seatbelt survey at Owensboro Catholic Middle School on October 18. From that survey, 85% were using seatbelts. Members of SCRUBS also held a seatbelt survey at Owensboro Catholic High School September 7 with 88% using their seatbelts.

SCRUBS students handed out lifesavers candies as a reminder that seatbelts save lives.

SCRUBS Co-Sponsors are Bev Howard & Sherry Krampe.

Buckle up and drive safely! The difference between Heaven and Earth may be a seatbelt.

Scoliosis Screening - 8th Grade Class

The Scoliosis Screening for 8th grade students will be held on Friday, October 21, 2011 at OCMS. A team of Registered Nurses will conduct the scoliosis screening. Boys will be screened separately from the girls, and each student’s privacy will be protected. The student will need to remove his/her shirt in order for the RN to assess the spine. Girls may wear a sports bra.

The screening only takes a few minutes. The procedure for screening is simple, painless, and takes only a minute. The Registered Nurses will look at the child’s back, standing and bent forward.

If further examination is indicated, you will be notified by the school nurse and requested to take your child to your family physician or pediatrician.

If you declined the screening as indicated on the scoliosis consent form obtained at Registration in July, your child will not be screened.

Screenings will be conducted during the 1st and 2nd blocks.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Scoliosis Screening, please call or email Sherry Krampe, RN, BSN at 270-852-8005 or sherry.krampe@owensborocatholic.org

Strategic Planning - Stakeholders' Retreat

In an earlier Director's Corner, I informed the Owensboro Catholic Schools community about a Strategic Planning process begun last year by the Long Range Planning Committee of the OCS Education Council. I am excited to inform you that the Stakeholders' Retreat mentioned in the Director's Corner will occur on Monday, October 17th (next Monday) from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Mount St. Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. Please join me in praying for the success of this important session. Facilitated by Dr. Regina Haney of the National Catholic Educational Association, 50 leaders of our community will gather to discuss, converse and share their ideas and insights concerning Owensboro Catholic Schools and its future. Flowing from our Mission and a common Vision, this Strategic Plan must be the driving force that pushes Owensboro Catholic Schools into a viable, vital and successful future.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend two important conferences - one was on Catholic School Sustainability hosted by the O'Meara Ferguson Center for Catholic Stewardship on the campus of Marian University and the other was the Ohio Catholic Education Association Conference. Both provided me the opportunity to attend sessions on the importance of strategic planning for Catholic Schools. I found one question that kept coming up - What does it mean to be excellent? Throughtout my time as Director, I have stated that to live our Mission we must provide excellence in faith formation and academics. The time has come for us to actually define what it means to be excellent! My goal is to challenge those who have agreed to spend the day as participants of the Stakeholders' Retreat to help begin that process. I will remind them that all who choose OCS as their Catholic education partner, expect to find excellence in all phases of the Aces experience - both in the classroom and as a part of every student's extracurricular activities. The time has come to be able to define in quatifiable and measurable ways what we mean by it.

I am extremely excited to move forward with this project. It certainly my vision and the vision of the Long Range Planning Committee to find ways to involve as many members of the Owensboro Catholic Schools community in the process. Following the retreat, the plan calls for the development of sub-committees to tackle the prioirties and begin to build sections of the new Strategic Plan. In the end, I am convinced that we need a plan that is owned by all in the Owensboro Catholic Schools community. All will be invited to particpate either by serving as a member of one of these sub-committees or by sharing your insights and ideas. In the weeks and months to come, I will keep informed of ways that will be able to involve yourself in this important process.

I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our Mission and the Mission of the Church to Build the Body of Christ. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached by phone at 852.8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org

God's peace!

Director's Corner - Fall Break

As in your life, nothing in my life these days seems to run in slow motion. As a matter of fact, all seems to be stuck in fast forward. I am amazed that as of today, we have completed one quarter of the school year. It only seems like yesterday that we were hosting Registration, holding Meet Your Teacher Nights at both OCES K-3 and 4-6 Campuses, welcoming new 7th graders to Owensboro Catholic Middle School and freshmen to Owensboro Catholic High School. To say that time seems to have flown by would be an understatement for sure. From all that I hear from our Principals and many of you, we have experienced an amazing start to the 2011-2012 school year. I hear wonderful accounts that show that as a faith community we truly are partnering - family, parish and school - to build the body of Christ. How exciting! Kudos and thanks to all who work so diligently to live our Mission and make it real and alive for our students. As I remember hearing our youth say at Youth 2000 - "God is Good - All the Time & All the Time - God is Good!"

With Fall Break upon us, know that my prayers are with you and your families. May the time off provide much needed rest and family filled fun and relaxation. May this special opportunity to step back provide our students and their families the chance to refresh and make ready for the 2nd quarter. I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852.8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org . May God shower upon all His blessings and share with you His peace!

Faith In Education T-shirts - 2011 Edition

As you know, over the past several years, the Owensboro Catholic Schools have provided your child with a free Faith In Education t-shirt. The t-shirts have been varied in design, and colors, and based on the number of them still seen around Owensboro Catholic events and the broader community, they have been very popular.

The t-shirts were created to give students a way to show their pride in OCS and in being Catholic!

Over the past few years, we have subtly incorporated new logos such as the Auspice Maria , as seen to the left, which means under the protection of Mary, to the t-shirts, so as to lead to further discussion about their faith.

This year, the t-shirts will have a saint incorporated in the design of the t-shirt. These saints, chosen by the sites themselves, hold special importance to the students' age group or school site. This same saint, along with others, will have pictures placed in the schools. This will give teachers an opportunity to incorporate learning about these particular saints into classroom.

Why do we honor the saints?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church # 828 - 'By canonizing some of the faithful, i.e., by solemnly proclaiming that they practiced heroic virtue and lived in fidelity to God's grace, the Church recognizes the power of the Spirit of holiness within her and sustains the hope of believers by proposing the saints to them as models and intercessors. "The saints have always been the source and origin of renewal in the most difficult moments in the Church's history." Indeed, "holiness is the hidden source and infallible measure of her apostolic activity and missionary zeal."

Elementary K-3 Campus - St. Bernadette
Since the church we attend for Mass each week is named after Our Lady of Lourdes, we thought it was only fitting that we choose Saint Bernadette since she was the young girl that Mary appeared to in Lourdes, France telling her that she was the Immaculate Conception, a teaching which became dogma in the Catholic Church in 1854.

Elementary 4-6 Campus - St. Michael
We chose St. Michael because the prayer to Saint Michael is taught in 5th grade and review in 5th grade. We felt like he would be a good example to help our students with the struggles and temptations of this age. Help to be positive role models and stand up for what is right.
Owensboro Catholic Middle School - St. Paul
St. Paul is the "hero" of the Acts of the Apostles. Our 8th graders study the Acts of the Apostles the entire first quarter in Religion in preparation for Confirmation.

Owensboro Catholic High School - St. Matthew
As one of the Gospel writers all students study during their four years, sophomore students spend time during the year studying St. Matthew.
