iPod Touch Units in Curriculum

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

Excitement was in the air at the OCS Elementary K-3 Campus! Thanks to a generous donation from an OCS donor, the 3rd graders at the Elementary K-3 Campus will have a new mode to enhance learning-iPod Touch units were added to the daily curriculum. Students can practice their math facts, learn how to count money, do geometry, grammar, dictionary skills, read the bible, and have fun while doing it.

Children who might not want to practice learning their multiplication facts on paper think it is fun when it is presented through technology. It is a great way to differentiate to meet the varying needs of all students so that everyone is successful! It's all about teaching the children in the technological world they are growing up in.

Director's Corner - Enrollment Update

Several weeks ago in a Director’s Corner, I excitedly reported to you the good news concerning our projected enrollment for 2011-2012 based on pre-registration. I am eager to share that the good news continues!
On Monday night at the OCS Education Council Meeting, I reported to the Council that our projected enrollment (1279 actually pre-registered and 58 currently enrolled and not yet pre-registered) could be 1337 students. I reminded the Council that our history over the past several years has shown that even though we have not enrolled all of those not yet pre-registered; we have successfully reached the projection with new students who pre-register during the summer. Reaching this enrollment count on the first day of school in August would not only mean showing growth in 3 of the last 4 years, our enrollment would be the largest since we reconfigured in 2004-2005. Amazing! God is surely blessing us.
On Monday morning prior to the Education Council meeting, the Leadership Team met to thoroughly review our enrollment projections by grade in order to make recommendations at the meeting concerning staffing needs for 2011-2012. Based on the projections by grade, we recommended to the Education Council the following:

Add a 6th Kindergarten class – There are currently 130 Kindergartners pre-registered with still others in the pipeline. Certainly this is the biggest Kindergarten class in recent history.

Add a fourth 5th Grade class – We currently have four 4th Grade classes (97 enrolled students). The projected enrollment is 101.

Add a fourth 6th Grade class – We currently have three 5th Grade classes (83 enrolled students). The average class is 27.7. Our projected enrollment is 86. Our decision to grow by one class and lower the average size of each class was based on our desire to meet the individual learning needs of these students.

I am extremely excited to report that after discussion, both the Education Council and Fr. John Vaughan, OCS Priest-Pastor, approved this recommendation. The process of posting job announcements for these new and important positions has begun.
I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org .

Director's Corner -

A few minutes ago, I received the following message sent by Tom Shelton, Superintendent of Daviess County Public Schools, to the Daviess County Public School community concerning the decision to close schools today. I thought all in the Owensboro Catholic Schools family would benefit from reading this important message.
“The decision to close schools today (May 3) was made early this morning as our staff monitored flooding conditions throughout the night and early morning hours. In addition to roads that were already closed, several additional roads were also flooded this morning. There are several areas in which we are no longer able to reroute buses.

As we have communicated throughout this event – and always – safety is our PRIORITY. Schools were open as long as we were able to provide safe transportation to and from school, giving students a warm, dry, safe place to be during the day, with hot meals and the comfort of a regular routine – even as some of their families worked to protect their homes from rising floodwaters.

We plan to submit a request to the Kentucky Department of Education and the DCPS Board of Education to approve “forgiveness” for today’s absence. These entities may authorize missing up to two days of school for excessive school closings this year due to inclement weather, so with their approval, we can miss today and one other day without having to make these days up. (Clarification: Students will not have to make up these days but staff will work). If approved, the last day of school for students will remain unchanged at Thursday, June 2.

In the meantime – I want to extend a special word of appreciation to our bus drivers and all members of the DCPS Transportation Department for their professionalism, commitment to safety, and vigilance in monitoring and reporting road conditions throughout this experience. Thank you!”

Please join me in echoing Mr. Shelton’s special words of appreciation and thanks to the all bus drivers and members of the DCPS Transportation Department for all they do in these difficult conditions to keep our students safe and protected at all times. May God shower His blessings and peace on them and their families!
Also, let us keep in our prayers all who have been impacted by the rising waters. I encourage any OCS families who are experiencing difficulties due the weather conditions to keep us notified and informed. We are eager to be of support and assistance.
I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission of excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.
God’s Peace!
