Elementary K-3 Campus Weekly Reminders - November 28-December 2, 2011

Thursday, December 1- 9:00- Mass- Mrs. Fulkerson's 1st Grade Class

The planning has started and we are gearing up for our 6th annual PTO Dinner & Auction. If you would like to find out more about this event or be a part of fundraiser, then please come tonight- Monday, November 28 at 7:00 pm.

We will meet at Wells Health Systems which is located at 725 Harvard Dr.

Please contact Amy Pride at 686-7929 or email her at amypride3@att.net if you have any questions about this event.

As we begin the Advent Season, the BEST part about going to a Catholic School is that we can celebrate our faith and pray in preparation for the celebration of Jesus' Birthday!  For Advent we will be preparing in the following ways:

1. We will reach out to those babies who like Baby Jesus might not have all they need by having a "Missions Baby Shower". We ask each family to send in one of the following and we will donate the items to Birthright of Owensboro:

Diapers, Baby Wipes, Formula, Onesies, Baby Shampoo, Bottle Brushes, Socks, Baby Washcloths, Towels OR Nightgowns and Slippers for the Mother

Please send these to school during the week of December 12-16.

2. Each child will keep a special Advent Folder in the Classroom that will come home sometime during Advent. It will be filled with special activities, prayers, and good deeds to prepare our hearts for Christmas.

3. We will begin each day with an Advent Song and Meditation as a school. The morning song will be led by a different class each morning over the PA system. Ask your child to sing the "COME and WORSHIP" song to you!

Toil for Joy - Elementary 4-6 Campus

Thanksgiving reminds us to be grateful for so many things. The OCES 4-6 Campus classes counted their blessings on “Letters of Appreciation” display in the main hallway. Many wonderful unique blessings were mentioned such as “the smell of my granddad,” the laughter of those I love,” and “the gift of my Catholic education.”
These gifts of gratitude can be expressed through our acts of good deeds for our Elementary 4-6 Campus Advent Project. We are collecting hats, gloves, and scarves for the Pitino Shelter. We are wanting the children to “Toil for Joy” in this venture. In other words instead of parents purchasing these, the children do a good deed such as raking leaves, babysitting, or cleaning to earn the money that would be spent on the hats, gloves, and scarves.

Keys will be available in the classrooms to be filled out when your child “earns” this joy that will be given. Please help your child “TOIL FOR JOY” during this giving season.

Check Your Child's Cafeteria Account On Line

We realize it can be difficult to keep track of fees and payments to the school district. To help simplify payment of school food service fees, The Diocese of Owensboro School Food Service has enrolled in an internet-based service called Café Prepay. This service is a website where you can pay for your child’s Breakfast and Lunch meals using your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Participation in this is voluntary; you may enroll at any time. There is a website charge of $2.50 for each transaction. The School Food Service will not receive any part of this charge.

Café Prepay also enables you at no charge to view your student’s participation report, which means you can monitor your child’s spending and see exactly what they’re eating each day (via the Participation Report link.)

  1. To get started, you will first enroll at http://www.cafeprepay.com/ .
  2. You will be asked to enter your email address and a password, which will be used each time you log in. Please note that a valid email address is required and that Café Prepay stores any necessary personal information in a secure, offline database which is accessed only to process payments and send payment confirmation via email.

Please visit their website of common questions for more information.

For more information you may contact Theresa Ballard, Food Service Director Diocese of Owensboro at 270-852-8355 or via email at Theresa.ballard@pastoral.org

Thanksgiving Collection Next Week at Elementary 4-6 Campus

On Thursday, November17, the school will celebrate its Thanksgiving Liturgy. As part of the presentation of gifts, we would like each student to come forth with a canned good or personal care item, reaffirming his/her resolve to share with those in need.

May we encourage you to find a way to have your child "earn" the item he/she brings as offering. Sometimes we make it too easy for our children - just looking in the cupboard and taking a item does not always impress upon them the difficulty and hardship endured by much of the world (and our local community) in putting food on the table. Insisting that they perform some chore, or act of charity, may help to make this a reality in their lives. Can you imagine your child helping rake the yard in return for the item he/she will offer at the liturgy?

Students may bring their items to school between Monday, November 14, and Thursday, November 17 .
May the Lord continue to bless you for your generous spirit toward the poor and needy.

Driving Safety is Important

The leading cause of death in teens is from auto accidents. Many of these wrecks are thought to have been survivable if only seatbelts were used by the vehicle occupants. However, defensive, safe driving should always be practiced regardless of the driver's age.

Listed below are the leading causes of auto accidents in order - and all of them are under the driver's control:
* Speeding

* Unsafe or too-frequent lane changing

* Not using turn signals

* Tailgating

* Not yielding the right of way

* Ignoring traffic signals

* Driving while impaired by alcohol or chemicals
Remember to buckle-up EVERY time and drive safely. Donot get in a vehicle of an unsafe driver. Parents, continuously remind your teen driver of this. Nagging them about this may save his or her life.
