Contacting Your Legislators
Earlier today we received the email shared below from the offices of the Council for American Private Education (CAPE). As Catholic school administrators we were encouraged very quickly to inform our families about the importance of communicating the message with our Senators and members of the House of Representatives that independent and religious schools should be included in the economic stimulus package that Congress is drafting.
I encourage you to read the email and click on the link attached within the email to learn more. CAPE has also provided an easy way for you to share your opinion on this important matter with your Senator and members of Congress. It is important that our voice be heard and it be heard very quickly.
I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission to provide excellence in faith formation and academics in a Christ-centered environment.
As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org.

We need you to convey to your Senators and members of the House of Representatives that independent and religious schools should be included in the economic stimulus package that Congress is currently drafting.
On January 15, 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 came before the House Appropriations Committee. Within the $825 proposed investment in the U.S. economy is a section that would target $14 billion dollars to spend on school modernization and repair projects that have a positive effect on the environment. Unfortunately, only public and charter schools are included in this proposed appropriation.
ASAP, please call or e-mail your members of Congress and urge them to include independent and religious schools in the economic stimulus package.
CAPE, the Council for American Private Education, has begun an advocacy effort on this issue on its website. Since this legislation is likely to move quickly through Congress, referring your school communities to the CAPE website is the most efficient way to reach legislators. CAPE has provided resources to explain the issue in more detail and has drafted a sample letter on its Capwiz software.
Please contact your legislators on this issue and try to create and advocacy effort among others. It is essential that the independent and religious school communities speak seek equitability and fairness as this new Congress and Administration begin their work.
Thank you for your efforts.

Roe v Wade Commemoration
Daviess County Courthouse Lawn
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
12:00 Noon
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court legalized abortion for ANY reason. Thursday, January 22nd, marks the 36th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Because of this decision, a baby dies every 24 SECONDS from abortion and 48 MILLION babies have been aborted since 1973. We have learned many facts since this date. For instance, 18 days after conception the heart begins beating. Five weeks after conception the brain becomes active and pain receptors appear. Ultrasounds have proven that at 10 weeks a fully formed baby is present in the mother's womb.
We have also learned that abortion hurts women. Not only do women who have had abortions suffer many physical complications such as hemorrhaging and future miscarriages, they suffer many emotional complications as well.
Please join Right to Life of Owensboro at the Courthouse to commemorate the day the Supreme Court made this decision. Father Richard Meredith of St. Pius X and Pastor Wes Roberts of Bellevue Baptist Church will lead us in prayer. Our service begins at 12:00 Noon and will last only a few minutes. Please show your support for the women, remember the babies that have been aborted, and pray for future births by attending.

OCS Elementary 4-6 Campus to Participate in ‘Lincoln in the Land of Bluegrass’
“Lincoln in the Land of Bluegrass” musical on Feb 12th with one free show at 9 AM for school children and a second show at 7 PM for the general public at RiverPark Center’s Cannon Hall ($5 adults, $3 students, at the door) to support not only the bluegrass museum but also this ambitious and creative community collaboration celebrating the life of one great native Kentuckian – Abe Lincoln – set to music in the style created by another great native Kentuckian, Bill Monroe. This is our history set to the music of our culture -- created, composed, and performed by community residents of all ages.
Over 300 students at three local schools -- Catholic Elementary 4-6 Campus (representing Catholic schools), Newton Parrish (representing City Schools), and Country Heights (representing County schools) wrote some of the songs and will be performing their original creations in the production. Students from Foust have created choreography for the finale and will dance it, as well, with vast energy.
Kevin Thompson and Emily Wills, both from OCMS, are also part of the production.
The musical will be highlighted with an Abraham Lincoln Exhibit on loan (for that day only) from the KY Historical Society, installed in the lobby of RiverPark Center.
Also performing are Theatre Workshop of Owensboro actors, Randy Lanham’s Bluegrass Band and Barry Lanham’s Foot Stompin’ Express clogging troupe.

Director's Corner - Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
Earlier this week it was confirmed that one of our children at the K-3 Campus was recently diagnosed with Pertussis, or Whooping Cough.
Sherry Krampe, the OCS Student Health Coordinator, contacted Janie Cambron, Regional Epidemiologist, at the Green River District Health Department. Janie was incredibly helpful in developing an appropriate communication plan concerning this contagious disease with our families and staff.
A letter from the Green River District Health Department was sent home to the parents of those with students at the K-3 Campus. Attached to this Director's Corner message is an information sheet on Pertussis that she asked that we send to all OCS families. I encourage you to review the sheet carefully. If there are questions, do not hesitate to contact Janie at the Green River District Health Department or your doctor.
As is stated on the information sheet, this information is not meant to alarm you, but rather for you to be educated on and be watchful of any symptoms associated with this disease. We are thankful to the Green River District Health Department for their help and support.
I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission to provide excellence in faith formation and academics in a Christ-centered environment. As always, your comments and insights are important to me. I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org .

Health Room News - Smoking Cessation
With the New Year, lots of folks make resolutions to do things to increase their health, such as to quit smoking. Smoking is the #1 leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States.
Nicotine in tobacco products is VERY addictive! It only takes 7 seconds after a single puff from a cigarette for the chemical to enter your lungs, then blood stream, then enter the pleasure center of your brain, triggering the feeling of "I needed that" or "That feels good!" That is why so many folks feel the need to "light up" at their first opportunity.
Smoking is like any other bad habit or addiction known to man, such as overeating, alcohol, gambling, etc. We know we must stop & have been told by a Health Care Provider to stop because it is not good for us, but in a weak moment we give in & are back to our old ways. The first step is that YOU must be the one to decide that it is time to quit. YOU must be the one in control, not the addiction. YOU have to be INTERNALLY motivated, meaning, you won't be successful at quitting until YOU are serious about wanting to do it.
Here's Help! Again, smoking is a tough habit to kick, so there are many resources out there to support your efforts at quitting.
· Tell your family, friends, and people you work with that you are going to quit. Ask for their support.
· Talk to your health care provider worker. They can help you quit.
· Call 1-800-QUIT NOW (784-8669) to be connected to the State-wide quit-line. It's free. They will set up a quit plan with you.
· More info at www.bethemajority.com
· Also, the HealthPark offers Cooper Clayton classes, which is a 12 week support group that has been a successful ally for those who are ready to quit.
Wishing you good health in 2009!

Survey - OCS Elementary Yearbook
We need your help in another matter. For many years, we have partnered with Interstate Studio and Publishing Company to produce an Elementary School Yearbook. When we reconfigured we moved to a combined yearbook for the K-3 and 4-6 Campuses. The $10 price tag has remained constant for many years. Due to increased costs in producing the yearbook and decreased interest, the price has not covered the cost. It has been suggested that we discontinue producing the yearbook beginning this year.
Before that decision is made, I would like to hear from you. Below you will find a link to a brief survey. I ask that you take a few minutes to provide your opinion on the elementary yearbook. I am especially interested in hearing from those families that have children enrolled in either the K-3 Campus or 4-6 Campus. Please note that if the answer is yes, there will be a slight increase in the cost of the yearbook. Please respond no later than Thursday, January 15th at 5:00 PM.
I thank you in advance for your participation. I appreciate all you do to help us fulfill our mission to provide excellence in faith formation and academics in a Christ-centered environment. As always, your comments and insights are important to me.
I can be reached via phone at 852-8028 and email at ken.rasp@owensborocatholic.org .

Director's Corner - Results of Fundraising Survey
As we start the 2nd semester, let me start by wishing all the Happiest of New Years. May God continue to gift us with His blessing and grace as we purposefully work each day to fulfill the mission of the Church. I thank God each day for each of you and your commitment to and ownership of the OCS mission. Prior to Christmas I asked your opinion concerning three fundraiser options. I would like to thank all who were willing to share both a choice and in many cases a comment.
Here are the results of the survey:
· World's Finest Chocolate - 49.5%
· Welch's Fruit Snacks - 23.2%
· Restaurant/Vender Discount Cards - 27.3%
Based on these results, the decision has been made to once again work with World's Finest Chocolate. In the coming days, we will be working with our sales rep to organize the fundraiser. Comments that were shared in the survey related to a WFC fundraiser will be reviewed and utilized in this planning process.
By the end of this week a packet including a letter outlining the fundraiser, a sheet detailing incentive prizes, a Student Permission Slip will be sent home for you to review and respond. I encourage you to complete the Permission Slip and return it within the requested timeline.

Director's Corner - Freedom of Choice Act
For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is currently being discussed by our legislators in Washington. Throughout his campaign for President, Senator Obama promised that this would be the first piece of legislation he would sign into law as President.
The impact would remove all limitations on abortions and provide the following realities:
• All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals, will be required to perform abortions upon request. If this happens Bishops vow to close down all Catholic hospitals, more than 30% of all hospitals in the United States.
• Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.
• All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.
• Parental notification will no longer be required.
• The number of abortions will increase by a minimum of 100,000 annually.
Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true. As Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the needless killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.
I encourage you to take these two very important steps to help defeat this legislation.
• Contact your Senators and Representatives in Washington and tell them that you are opposed to the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). Urge them to also oppose FOCA.
• Pray a novena (9 days of prayer) along with fasting starting on January 11th. For Catholics, the prayer of choice is the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For non-Catholics, I encourage you to pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for nine consecutive days.
The hope is that opposition to FOCA will branch and blossom and become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast.
Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable. If you are against the senseless killing of defenseless children then please act and act quickly. Provided is a link to the Catholic Conference of Kentucky Website that will easily allow you to express your opposition to our representatives in Washington, DC.

Director's Corner - Kentucky Catholic Citizen Forum
I would also like to make you aware of an important event being sponsored by the Catholic Conference of Kentucky in Owensboro. The Kentucky Catholic Citizen Forum will be held on Saturday, January 24th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Parish Hall of St. Pius Tenth Catholic Church.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all members of the OCS Family to be informed on issues important to us as Catholics that may emerge in the 2009 Kentucky legislative session. Our state congressional senator and representatives have been invited to attend the day. Their presence and participation in this event will allow us to become advocates for those outlined issues.
Given the recent discussion concerning the transporting of our students in a safe and cost-effective manner, it will also allow us the chance to advocate for a transportation subsidy that actually meets the cost of transporting our students and all non-public school students across Kentucky.
Please use the attached response form to RSVP.

SCRIP SUCCE$$ Tuition Credit Update
As you may know, OC families have an obligation to raise $160 in profit from the SCRIP program, and after doing this; they earn $.75 of every profit dollar for tuition credit. In the school year of 2007-2008, OC families utilized the SCRIP program to help them reduce their out of pocket tuition costs by $110,000!
Make sure you are using SCRIP for every purchase you possibly can! It helps the school system and it helps reduce your out-of-pocket tuition cost.

Christmas SCRIP Sales Update
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
What you have accomplished over the Christmas holiday was nothing short of incredible. With the economy being off (or reported to be) we set an all-time record for SCRIP sales during the Christmas season. Sales were up over $200,000 during November and December! One reason for the increase was the success of the satellite office and weekend hours.
Thank you to all who came out to see us at the satellite office. We will be offering those weekend hours again next year. And no update would be complete without saying thank you to our SCRIP employees Debbie and Janet and the countless volunteers who helped fill the orders that created this record breaking season!
A very special thank you goes out to Melba for manning the satellite office. Your dedication to the SCRIP program and its success is a wonderful witness to helping us fulfill our mission! And a special thank you to Kathy and Jerry for helping out with the satellite office!
